April 2007 My first impression of Phnom Penh after having lived in LOS for almost two years, was how shabby and run-down it looked. Not surprising when you consider that Cambodia is still a LONG way from recovering from Pol Pot's genocidal regime. Despite it all, the place was certainly bustling, with lots of luxury cars on the road and plenty of new construction.

I had done quite a lot of research for this trip. My choice of where to stay was the California 2. Jim the American owner (in Cambodia, unlike LOS, Farangs can actually own a business) is quite an interesting guy, and has a lot of useful information on the hotel's website. The hotel is right on the river, and my room (all of $20) had a nice view. Breakfast is included! The restaurant and bar are quite busy. No P4Pp girls hanging around though, although it's a girl friendly place.

It was early in the day, so I visited the National Museum, which houses the best artwork from Angkor. It's definitely worth going to.

I had an lovely rooftop dinner at a place that featured North African cuisine. (sorry can't remember the name, but should be easy to find) Delicious and inexpensive!

My first stop for the evening HAD to be Club Cyrcee, since I had read so much about it. It's Phnom Penh's answer to Lolita's in Bangkok. I was the first guy in the door that evening, and was immediately swarmed by a bevy of pretty Khmer girls. One greeted me with a kiss that quickly turned into an attempt by her to remove my tonsils! Another sweetie was busy squirming in my lap while another sucked on an earlobe. Yes this was definitely the right place for me. The hard part was choosing which girl to take upstairs to play with. The solution: Take all three! After showering we settled in for an hour of multi-partner oral sex. These girls did NOT seem in a hurry to finish. How much you say? WITH tips AND drinks for everyone....$45! That would be just over 1200 Baht!

Where to next? I stopped in at Shanghai and was favorably impressed, lots of nice looking, friendly girls. The girls I was interested in were already engaged, so I decided to check out Martini's. Apparently this place has had more lives than a cat. It's current incarnation did not overly impress me. I did NOT like being frisked at the door by the security goon! The interior is dark and cavernous, without a whole lot of charm. I was ready to leave when I spotted an honest to goodness stunner sitting by herself in the corner. She was part Khmer, part Vietnamese, with a little French ancestry thrown in. She looked was if she had stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine.I approached, she smiled and asked me to sit down with her. soon we were having a few drinks and playing pool. She whipped my butt! As we got ready to leave, she asked me where I was staying. She was NOT happy with the California 2. She said she had a fight with the bar hostess and did not want to go back there. Since it's a pretty friendly place, I should have heard warning bells going off in my head, but my gonads were calling the shots that night. We went instead to a short-time hotel nearby. As unfortunately as it sometimes happens, the smoking hot bar girl morphed into the mother of all starfish. In fact if there such a thing as a Miss Starfish pageant, she would be a serious contender! Oh well, live and learn. This was still only my first night in town!

I spent a good part of the next day visiting one of the most famous death camps, and the the infamous Tuol Sleng, a former school turned into hell on earth by the Khmer Rouge. Being a student of history, I was familiar with what happened in these places, but as I was guided around and learned the sickening details, I was nearly overcome. Apparently humanity has learned NOTHING from history, and so genocide goes on and on. :- (...... Sorry to go on about this, but you REALLY should visit these places.

On an entirely different note, that evening I enjoyed an excellent Indian dinner, and then was off for the evening's adventure. I got no farther than the Golden Vine. I immediately spotted a lovely, petite Khmer girl, who wound up being my GF for the rest of my trip. I will call her KGF. LT was $15. We hit it off in bed, she being both extremely talented and passionate. In the morning I asked her to come with me to Siem Reap and she excitedly said yes! She had always wanted to visit Angkor Wat. It turns out that she had gone to school to become an Apsara dancer. (Khmer classical dancing) The staff at the hotel arranged for a bus to pick us up the next day.

We spent the day shopping....mostly for her, but I enjoyed getting things for her, especially since she never once asked for anything! Since the hotel we would be staying at in Siem Reap had a swimming pool, we picked out a cute little swimsuit for her. That night we stopped by the Golden Vine to pay the barfine for our little holiday, and stayed to have a bowl of excellent soup. The rest of the girls were all excited that I was taking their "sister" on a vacation. I received a number of hugs and kisses, with KTG smiling on in approval.

The bus trip to Siem Reap took six hours. Apparently this was the best road in Cambodia...rough, but no craters! Siem Reap is another kettle of fish altogether compared with Phnom Penh. Because it caters to tens of thousands of well to do tourists, it is a nice looking place with lots of nice hotels, restaurants and places to shop. I chose the Green Garden Home to stay at. It was a cool and green place with a lovely swimming pool, only a few minutes walk from bar street. Believe me, after a days walking around the temples in the hot sun, a pool is JUST what you need. KGF and I went to a korean style b-b-q that night for a fine dinner.....and then of course to bed!

I had already engaged the service of a guide and driver for a four day tour of Angkor. I really lucked out with a most knowledgeable and friendly guy. If anyone is interested, e-mail or pm me and I will send you details.

I won't go into detail about Angkor. Suffice it to say that despite losing out in recent voting...IS one of the 7 Wonders of the World. I know ancient temples are NOT everyone's thing, but for me, 4 days was hardly enough, and I would like to return there someday. I also got a kick out of seeing KGF FINALLY learning about her ancient heritage. I look about a thousand pictures and put them on a CD for her. Of course 4 nights of passionate lovemaking. and sleeping in each other's arms WAS pretty damn exciting too!

If you are looking for a REAL alternative to LOS, I would definitely take a trip to Cambodia!

You summed it all up in your last line, a real alternative to the LOS. When Nana hotel raised their rates to 1290/night Sukhumvit officially became a less than super value in my book. It certainly hasn't gotten 29% better.

I can't say I saw too many luxury cars on my 2 trips to PP though. I think motos ruled the road there at about 75% of the vehicle s on the street with the occassional delivery truck and NGO Range Rover.

Bustling for sure but not as congested as Bangkok. Quite laid back on the riverfront, better coffee baquettes and pizza than in BKK. Sure there may be a better one of all of these somewhere in BKK, but probably not on your block.

Sharky pool bar bar beats New Wave on soi 7 in spades. Europeans can and should take advantage of the weak dollar now in Cambodia.

Nice FR, and Cafe Califonia 2 has free coffee all day for its guests as well. Sorry about your starfish, if she has issues with the sweethearts who work at CC2 she's most likely the problem.

Very nice and interesting report! IMO Thailand has had it's best days, it's pretty dead and uninteresting in terms of mongering and service. My preferred destinations now are Philippines and Brazil.

As for culture and travel side of it I have been wanting to go to Cambodia for a while, namely because of the war hsitory.

By war I guess you're referring to the Khmer Rouge? Please don't go for that sake alone. You can get pretty depressed dwelling on that although it should not be forgotten.

I guess what I'm saying is that Cambodia has more to offer to visitors than a look at its misfortunes. It deserves to be viewed as a nation with a proud history. Looking at the Khmers primarily as victims only serves to hold them back. Just my two cents.

I agree with all you say for Cambodia and add that I also prefer Vietnam,,, Thailand is pricing itself out of the game.
I hope I live long enough to see the BKK - PP-SGN high speed train built and running,,, ahhhh what a trip that would be,,, cheap flight into BKK 2days there relaxing,, fast train to Phnom phen, 2weeks of great times,, quick train to Saigon ahhh another 2 weeks of fun then fly home.

Mel.

I ment Killing Fieds and the like, also other sightseeing that a tour will bring you. I want to see it myself, not only as pictures.

And a bit mongering on top of that, I think that should take care of the dwelling and turn it into swelling

I always liked how the Thai girls with Khmer blood looked like.

BS - OK well you didn't mention other reasons besides war history. I'd recommend having your fun first so those horrors are not on your mind when you're trying to enjoy yourself. PP is shocking enough especially compared to Bangkok which is luxurous in comparisson. Or at least luxury is available. PP has nary a traffic light or street light at night, pretty spooky.

Mel, That would be one bad ass trian ride, but I suspect it would cost 5x as much as flying on budget airlines these days.

If you want something like Club Cyrcee but a bit more rustic to say the least Sophie's is worth checking out.

I somehow like Sophie's with it's lack of class more then Cyrcee.

I always find once I arrive in Phnom Penh I just seem to slow down and relax. Somehow I always end up spending longer there then I had planned.

I just can't be bothered or motivated to get my ass in gear and book a flight to leave.

It is true Cambodia went through hell and many were killed. As Black cats says it can be a bit much once you walk through the killings fields and stuff like that.

What impressed me about Cambodia was the people. After all that hell they went though, I was surprised how friendly the people were.

I couldn't bring my self to get out of bed and kick the cute girl who was sleeping so sound beside me out, so I missed my flight.

Spent 2 hours at the airport (and the airport is rather simple with nothing really to do while you are their) so I waited outside.

I spent two hours chatting to the guys who work trying to get new arrivals to book with their hotel. It was a simple two hours but the people didn't want anything except to talk to me.

Yup. Sophie's will make your head spin

The major difference between here and Cyceree, service wise, is you get a sample right at the bar from 3 or 4 chix. A tip of 1-2 thousand riel to any of the ones you didn't choose is fine.

Then you get your 1 hour BJ for $10! The rooms are not as nice as say Lolita's in Pattaya, but the service is proven good!

Cambodia is improving slowly buy surly. I view BKK as being like color TV while PP is like black/white TV. What the heck.

I took a ride along the river through the industrial river port area, saw MPs advertising for 5000 Rs ($1.25). Real classy places, they had dirty sheets hanging on twine as dividers between the massage cots.

I saw a good MP in SR that advertised 5000Rs for 1hr, never did try it out, had to save something for the next trip.

I'd love to see cross border train service, even the snail pace of the Thai trains would be nice.
