Air Asia now has afternoon flights between PP and BKK but the last time I checked, the return flight was 1900 baht. So while not having to get up at the crack of dawn any longer, it's not so cheap anymore.
An overnight train would be nice, but let's face it, Cambodia doesn't attract as much international aid as Thailand does to build improved railway tracks, higways etc.
Thailand produces a fair number of elctronics and other consumer goods that benefit foreign corporations so the governments of those corporations feel it necessary to invest in Thailand's development--in a nut shell. There's also things like allowing the US to build Utapao air base with rights to use it should a war occur in SE Asia and Thailand made good on that promise during the Vietnam war. Annual Cobra Gold exercises, continuing throughout the coup as well, makes Thailand a reliable partner too.
Cambodia on the other hand doesn't play ball in this sense (and due to past history won't be asked to any time soon) so building some tracks is almost out of the question.
Lengthy tangent I know, but from seeing both countries, I think this is the key difference between why Thailand is developing and Cambo is truly 3rd world. It's unfortuante for all those people who are being left behind due to decisions made by Cambodia's leaders decades ago.

Well, that and the Pol Pot regime, quite effectively reducing Cambodia to year zero, and seemingly snuffling the last bit of entrepreneurial zest out of the Cambodians. And the billions of land mines everywhere. And the fact that something like 50% of the economy is foreign aid, so the best way of making money is learning to cheat the system rather than create wealth.
Cambodia is one f***ed up country!
