I hate to start this thread with such a monumental death...
But Walter Cronkite just passed...he was "The most trusted in America" in his day and I can remember the vids of him just pulling his glasses off when he announced the death on JFK...

That was, of course, waaaay before I was born but he did anchor news when I was a young buck!
Nowadays you have correspondents that fit whatever spectrum you believe in, but in his day you had 3 news channels and he was the man then!!!!!

RTB - never mind on which forum the Hodge Porge is,
watch Walter Conrkite announse on-air. realtime at the time he spoke, that "Neil Armstrong is on the moon - a 38 year old american is standing on the surface of the moon", whilst he takes of his glases with this characteristic hand movement of his and dries off a tear from the corner of his eye. He shakes his head as if in disbelief. It sgreat stuff for a space buff.
I was 15 at the time and watched it on another channel elsewhere in the world, but it is embedded in the movie Apollo 13 at the very opening and it still gives me the goose bumps.

I was watching an old interview with Walter tonight and he said he was "thrown" into the TV spectrum as he was hired by CBS just before they really got into TV and because he could read the news rather well they said to him they were switching him to TV...and the rest is history!
I often think of how easy it would be to have been around at that time in history and make a name for yourself in TV/Movies...
f*** a journalism degree or as an actor f*** Julliard...
IMO, if you possessed an ounce of talent, drive, and marketability one could of made it big back then....
But thus are the times we live in now....shit, if I lived back in the "guilded age" I may have bought the rights to Coca Cola for whatever insignificant amount that Asa Candler bought it for
