From Arabian Business.

Saudi to build $13bn 'tourist city' on east coast.

Saudi Arabia has announced plans to build a $13bn ‘tourist city’ in Al-Oqair, just south of Al-Khobar on the Kingdom’s eastern coast.

According to Prince Sultan bin Salman, chairman of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA), the first phase of the project will cost $27m, Arab News reported.

The Al-Oqair project will create 80,000 jobs for Saudi men and women, and the local mayor said that the municipality would receive at least $27m in annual revenue from the development.

“Al-Ahsa municipality will have a 25 to 30 percent stake in the project and will be in partnership with SCTA,” he told Al-Yaum Arabic daily, according to Arab News.

The Al-Oqair plan is just one of a series of tourism megaprojects that Saudi Arabia is developing throughout the Kingdom.

On the Red Sea coast, the government has earmarked sites for development in Tabuk, Yanbu, Makah, Asir and Jizan provinces.

SCTA officials said that the planned resorts would being a total of 557,000 hotel rooms online, creating 413,000 jobs in the process.

The government expects that the Red Sea projects will attract $40bn in investment, with annual tourist spending estimated at $2.6bn.

I can see possible opertunities for internal tourism on the west cost due to diving in the Red Sea, I am not a scub diver mysef but took advantage of some great snorkeling opertunites when I was working in Yanbu and the atmosphere that side is a lot less uptight.

But Just south of Al-Khobar Even without the KSA factor that is plain daft.

With respect to the east coast, why bother when Bahrain is only a causeway away...

Well, in this respect, Theravada Buddhism is not much better, the Buddha teach that life is suffering, and that any enjoyment you get is like "honey on a razorblade". Most Thai Buddhist Master make a point to look as grumpy as possible when you picture them because they think it look "smart" and that its somehow inapropriate for a monk to smile...

But Thai people are mostly animist with a slim varnish of Buddhism, so its OK for them to smile and enjoy life as long as they go to Temple "make merit" from time to time...

The Buddha would likely be mystified by "Thai Buddhism" as it is practiced now, as it has almost nothing in common with his original teaching!
One famous Thai Buddhist Master (Ven. Buddhadassa Biku) was clear that "Buddhism in Thailand has hit rock botom and is rotten to the core"
