BK I agree with you on the AW a couple of months ago when I was with my friend who blows too much money, he kept on buying the mamasan's drinks there until one actually fell on her ass shit faced drunk. He barfined her to go home, so she would not get into trouble??? I know what an idiot, I already told him at the time. Silly money

got free drinks from thai bar owners mainly in soi cowboy. but there are also some bright spots in nana such as the one rtb was talking about. but in general more likely to get drinks from farang owners than from thai owners!

If your talking about inside go-go bars the answer would be yes, plenty of drinks from farang owners or managers, but very rarely from any of the Thai staff (though it has happened). ŬThe reason I probably haven't gotten more free drinks from Thai staff (such as mamasans) in go-go's is probably that I just don't spend much time in them.
If your talking about beer bars or other venues the answer is definately yes. ŬI've received plenty of free drinks from Thai staff outside of go-go bars. Ŭ
In all cases where free drinks were forthcoming, I am certain it was not just my personal charm that illicited these unpaid beverages. ŬRather, it was/is my proven track record of being a silly spender willing to waste ridiculous amounts of money on liquor for both myself and plenty of funloving staff that wishes to get drunk with me.
Actually, I find if you are fun to be around and show a willingness to spend some baht - free drinks will usually be used to keep one from leaving. ŬAfterall, even Thai staff with the most backward business management and customer relations skills often recognize that if 1 drink will keep you long enough to buy 8 more - it was a good investment. ŬAnd if your fun and keeping everyone laughing and smiling, you might just get that drink anyway.

Actually, I find if you are fun to be around and show a willingness to spend some baht - free drinks will usually be used to keep one from leaving. Afterall, even Thai staff with the most backward business management and customer relations skills often recognize that if 1 drink will keep you long enough to buy 8 more - it was a good investment. And if your fun and keeping everyone laughing and smiling, you might just get that drink anyway.
Absolutely correct, but this seems to escape the Thai mamasan's at the gogo's. I have spent time, in some cases years and at times spent silly money but no free drinks from them. Like yourself I have received free ones from the farang owners.

You got me thinking about this now as it had never really occured to me before.
Perhaps the reason is that go-go's just operate under different assumptions. ŬIn a beer bar or bar/restaurant, virtually all the establishments earnings would come from drinks and/or food. ŬThe cliental would be coming most specifically to drink, gather with friends, eat, play games or perhaps watch a sporting event - all things that could potentially involve hanging around the establishment for quite some time. ŬSince the mindset is the longer you stay, the more they make off the time you spend in the bar/restaurant, it might just occur to them more quickly to pass you a free drink every now and again.
Perhaps the expectation by many staff or managers in a go-go is that most people will come in with the specific purpose of finding a girl to their liking and leaving. ŬThe customers may buy a few drinks, but the staff may well believe they only have precious little time to soak you for whatever they can until you either decide you don't want to take a girl, or have found one and are ready to barfine and go. ŬIf that is the mindset of the staff - whether they be Thai or not, it probably wouldn't be a conducive atmosphere for staff to believe a free drink would help their business.
Ofcourse in reality, the same rule applies to go-go's as any other establishment - the longer you stay buying drinks and whatnot, the more they make. ŬBut the staff's perception of why you are there and how long your likely to stay may just be different in go-go bars.
I dunno. ŬI am just thinking out loud. Ŭ
