Nevertheless, that's what happened.

Or else the US Consul General lied to me? Not one of the assistant consuls mind you. THE Consul General to the Phillipines. Name: John Adams. Retired from the State Department 1995, and as far as I know still is living somewhere in the DC area. A former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State ought not to be hard to find despite the rather common name. Try WHO'S WHO for starters.

Why should he lie to me?

Anyway I assume the USN had the cooperation of the national government and they arranged for the girls in metro Manila to cooperate.

As I said this ought to be a matter of public record, somewhere.

not doubting you.
just think it is strange that the US navy docs walked up to 9000 girls and asked if it was alright for them to be tested.

a very high figure i think.
phuket is my speciality and i cannot imagine the US arriving and going to all the bars and asking the girls to be tested.
how many of them would say no?.

how long did this take?.
1 day?
1 week?
1 month?
1 year?

At the time this happened the US still had two major military bases in the PI, and a lot of personnel.

The team that performed the tests were however from out of the country. It was not one or two people. I don't know the exact logistics of the thing, I only got a verbal summary from my pal the CG when he was visiting us in Bangkok in June 94. We went out for dinner that night at Central Hotel, it happened to be my birthday.

Beyond that deponent knoweth not.

The only reason he told us, was because it was a breath of fresh air in what was otherwise a load of doom & gloom on this subject.

In Thailand the loudest mouth on AIDS used to be Dr Meechai. I happen to have had a drink with this fellow, he is not a MD he is an economist, used to be a Thai film star before he went bald.

Anyone who had been around long enough (not me, I was new here then) knew that Meechai's brother IS an MD, who owns a string of "family planning" (abortion) clinics and that the two brothers own a couple of large condom factories. Meechai used to be the loudest mouth in Thailand about population growth. Well, the growth rate is under control now.

D'ya reckon maybe it's in the economic interest of the condom business to be noisy about AIDS?

IMHO Meechai misrepresents himself as a medical doctor and the media are too lazy or stupid to bother to point out that he is a Ph.D. not an M.D.  Obviously it ups his credibility if he is taken to be a medico.

When I was in college, this silly class of students did a research project and concluded that pregnancy rates dropped dramatically over a 10 year period from the late 80's to the late 90's in Thailand.  They figured it was people learning not to have sex.

Uuuuughhhh!!  Don't tell the students about condom use.  Don't even state "Massage Parlor" to them.....they never even heard of Bangkok.

As for HIV math, many will say that condom use (latex) is not 100% protective.  That is true, if someone doesn't use it properly.....but if it is used right, you will stay safe.

I agree that media hype is to scare people.  Most are usually backed by rhetoric investment firms (like News Corp and Viacom....boy would it be nice if they are forced to break apart).
