I sorry to hear that you recently had a bad experience at Happy a Go-Go. Vacation or not,I think your first mistake was barfining all those girls in the first place! 
I've always had a great time when I'm in Happy's, actually, it's one of my top three places on Walking street. Yes, the Hostesses try to get as much out of you as possible, but if you show them who's boss, they won't take advantage of you! Know when to say "No"! 
It also helps ALOT if you can speak at least a little Thai, especially when it comes to money! 
One time I was there last July, as soon as I entered the bar, a bunch of Hostesses also surrounded me, only one that I liked. I signaled that I only wanted to focus on one, by bying only the hostess that I wanted a lady drink. The others got the message,and when elseware. I also made friends with the one of the male Thai waiters (?) there, and he was very helpful when I asked about each of the ladies on the stage ( a 100 baht tip does wonders! ). While I was chatting with the Hostess, I also got a lady drink for a girl that caught my eye on stage.
When that bargirl finished her set, she sat on one side of me, and the hostess on the other. After chatting with them for a while, I had to leave to meet some friends in another bar. They were sad to see me go, but I told them that I would return the next night.
Next night, as soon as I entered, I saw the hostess that I was with last night, she was busy with another customer. I smiled and winked at her, and chose another cute hostess that was around. While I was chatting with her, I got a nudge on my shoulder, and sure enough, it was the hot dancer that I was talking with the previous night! She wanted to go with me!After a half hour of drinks all around, it was getting near closing time, so I gave the scary looking mamasan the barfine, gave my cute hostess 100 baht ( which she was quite happy with ) and also my friendly Thai waiter friend another 100 baht ( which he was also quite happy with ), since he was really helpful that night too.
I took the girl back to my hotel, had great fun  , but she had to leave early, because of the Buddhist holiday next day, and she had to go to temple early. ST....Too bad I forgot her name,maybe it was for the best, but she was very HOT! And I had no complaints with her......  . But it was all good, Afterwards, I went to a afterhours club, and met another girl..
I had a blast at Happy's, but maybe I would have ended up just like Thermos if I didn't have as much Bar girl experience as I do now, and didn't speak passible Thai..

A good rule to follow is don't barfine any girl you have no plans of f***ing. Works for me. If I'm not doing them, I'm not barfining them.
Last year I barfined 3 ladies from DC10 at NEP. Had a few drinks as well. But after the drinking at the bar was done, it was back to the hotel room for fun.
Overall price was around 4000baht (including drinks/barfine). 
No headaches, no dramas, no b.s. Sometimes, even as a punter, you've got to approach the game (that's what it is really) in a business-like frame of mind. Laying your cards on the table. Wheelin' and dealin'..if you will.
If in doubt hook up with a fellow BTFer and don't get fooled again.

What is it with girls leaving in Pattaya? That used to be fairly common in Bangkok as some of these girls have real jobs too or are BKK natives with families etc.
But Pattaya chicks are starting to leave more and more. Sometimes this is good, like if I'm getting up at 7 in the morning to go diving, I prefer a good night's rest. But if I'm not, there's nothing like some breakfast in bed  , and on my past trips to Pattaya this was the norm. All the girls took 1000 baht without looking at it.
On this last trip I got the "I'm a dancer not a beer bar girl" excuse for a gril who wanted 1500 when it was said and done. And guess where she worked? Still she was one of the best lays I had that trip, kinky and energetic, so no complaints, but no repeat visit from yours truly either. Not when there's better value out there.

I think it is great that you wrote this even if your intention was only to vent. It may help some other first time visitor by making them more aware. I think what happened to you might happen at any bar at any time. Many of the girls think of us as walking ATM's as I am sure you know. When you start laying money down fast without concern it reinforces this view and they try not to leave any money in the machine. It is important to keep perspective in these things. Once you agreed to barfine 4 ladies they are all expecting to make some money. You were drinking and having a good time but they were working. At some point they realized you were only going to keep one so they got what they could and headed back for a more lucrative deal. The 1K each if they were with you for most of the evening could be considered fair as they spent their time with you instead of with someone else making money. You had demonstrated a capacity to pay without concern so no surprise. As for the one who backed out due to starting her period, I really don't understand her game. She could have played that better so that she made more money and you might have ended up happy. She could have convinced you to take a second girl (sounds like that particular night you were pliable enough) and let the second do the heavy lifting and gotten a better fee for herself as well.
I don't really know, but like I said, when you start quickly throwing around a lot of money and drinking a lot it is likely that the girls will go for all they can. It is their business after all. The good news is that it sounds like $300 is a mistake you can live with so no lasting harm done. Good future hunting.

Yeah I'd say you'll need to toughen up alittle. I have friends who, here in Oz go to strip clubs & get privates (she'll dances for you for 15minutes & at "some" clubs you can grope her titties only, as much as she'll allow) which sets you back $50 - $100.. It's not uncommon to see them go thru over $500 in the night, and no sex at the end of it.. so $300 isn't all that bad.
You wanted to have fun, so I can understand you bar fining then all & dinner & drinks, but common sense should have kicked in when the 1,000bht a piece tip was requested for each. WTF.. their bar fine dinner & drinks was their tip.. I would have canned all their sorry asses at that point, but when the other chick pulled that stunt in your room, well as ftumch recommended, you should have got her to service you in other ways, or get the f*** out, without a penny...
I kind of disagree to some extent that Thailand is place we learn about these things. I learnt most of this back home when I was much younger.
A little bit of common sense goes along way in LOS. Be firm & assirtive but diplomatic about the whole deal.
