CS there is another level of entertainment in BKK for the common man besides the P4P of NEP & SC. Those being dance clubs such as Bed, Q-Bar, GLOW, etc...
Tourists, especially Europeans like to go out and drink and dance. Mostly this occurs after dinner so they are hitting the cluibs at 11:00 PM.
Policies like these raids will only serve to deter people from vacationing here and if kept up will cause many clubs to close.
Singapore is now more liberal than Thailand with clubs open all night long. Maybe Thailand will smarten up.

It is more likely that the raids are a temporary scare mongering tactic, a bargaining tool, with the intent of creaming some more lolly -- a hike in the regular payoff -- from the barowners. LOS, like many other countries, has seen countless such crackdowns on bars, pirated CDs/ software, fake brands, etc.... none of which has even reduced although they do disappear for a brief while. Imagine the cops with TV cameras in tow storming a place like SOL just when the customers are, well, brimming.

Cool. Finally my 15 seconds of fame...
Geez, crack downs, new crack downs... They want to get tourists, they should be publicizing the new cracks up at a bar.
But I'd say tourism and bars are not what's on the government's agenda--they're just little tools in a more serious game now.

Seajohn: you hit the head on the nail good man... it is exactly what it is all about. If one could be a fly on the wall and listen in on what is going on behind the scenes right now. Some kind of excercise for bigger things? Who knows - but it is strange that this country cant finally have some peace and quiet on the political front. Instead I am very worried that the humpty dumpty man mr T is not exactly fallen off the wall permanently....
Talking politics: Mr primeminister visited Burma (Myanmar) recently and declared that there is no need to critisize the (terrible, my note) junta there! The oppressors are GOOD people because the military boys are doing MEDITATION!! One wonders if that is a view shared by the burmese people. Very telling about pmīs state of mind though. Olī pal of mr T! Brrrr.....

asked the local policemen last night. they said they did not know.
bars etc. were supposed to close by 1am. that is the law, he said.
they just came in for a piss, not a check up. it was past 1am and the bar was still open. they had no problem with that.
I am a criminal.
