You have to trip up, fart, hurt yourself, preferably do it next to a fat man in a dress and blonde wig and, most essentially, have it accompanied by a drum roll or 'wacky noise'.
Don't you watch TV? Thais have to have jokes pointed out by drum noises or 'wacky' sounds.

Not a way to make them laugh but my most successful way of breaking the ice is to use the USA Today Weather Map. 'You live here, I live there';' Here very cold, there lions live'.
So long as you are both fairly sober five minutes of this is sufficient to get and hold her attention. After a couple of drinks this leads to exaggerated miming and play acting. Fairly childish humour but overcomes the language problems.

When completely drunk a friend of mine bought a load of flowers from a flower seller in one of the bars in Patpong. He then went into the toilet and cut the stems in half. He then held the flowers and the stems together in one hand, so that it looked like he was holding a normal bunch of flowers. He then handed the girls flowers but held them in a way so that they grabbed the stems first. To see the girls smile when offered a flower, but then the look of surprise when they ended up with just a stem was funny at the time.
Stupid, simple, probably old hat.... but when completely drunk and in the mood - it broke the ice.
