Are you sure BK?, both times I was in there I recall seeing some thais. One white guy had brought his somewhat older, plump thai wife with him, she was clearly not happy being there, and a fight almost broke out when one of the CIS girls came over to lap dance for her husband... they soon left. I also saw some HiSo thai couples in there the last time I visited. But I didn't see any groups of Thai men, not that I ever do really.

I asked a girl why things were so tame in Hootys one night. She said it was because there was a Thai customer in attendance. Everyone assumed he must be a cop.

I guess, that restriction must be only for Thai men going in alone. If he/she is accompanied by a foreigner friend then no problem.

I would say there are quite a few bars in Bangkok and Pattaya which refuse Thai men. I remember a lot of bars, especially in SC, had curtains. If a farang approached, he was encouraged to have a peek. If a Thai man, along or in group, would do that the curtain would be closed immediately and stay firmly closed.

I go everywhere with my thai brother-in -law, we have never been refused entry to a bar. But one time in pretty lady the girl would not go with him when she found out he was thai. I just took the bar fine back for us both and went somewhere else.

heya all, jus back from a 2 nite stay in pattaya, list of bars that surely discriminate against Indians, dunno for Thai are: 1. Happy A go go, 2. Airport 3. Doll House, 4. Living dolls, 5. Angelwitch (on the second night!) these are the top ones, and also a few more pathetic bars, which had the crappiest gals I ever seen! in Living Dolls, the doorman started saying ok, u buy drink, buy drink, pay cover 300bt, one drink free. well, I was with another friend, and we paid and went inside, then complained to mamasan about it, and she justcharged for the drinks at regular price, and refunded the balance back. Living dolls also had crap girls, About Angelwitch, first nite was no problem, I had taken a waitress from there, amazingly cute and funny, with GREAT attitude, total GFE!!! Second nite, the doorman, maybe different didn't allow me inside, and then started the shit of pay cover, I told him I know mamasan, and also my friend work here, go call them! when I told the girl's name, then she checked and allowed us inside.

i'm back in Canada now but I lived in Bangkok for several years..... I'm caucasian myself but I'm well aware that many thais are, unfortunately, racist.... especially towards darker skins or at times any foreigners..... of course I agree it makes sense to boycott certain establishment, but I have to mention it probably won't alter the fundamentally racist tendencies of many thais funny story though, one time I went to a place that mainly catered to Japanese tourists (but prices were not bad and we were not refused entry) anyways the mamasan looked peeved about having to deal with cheap-looking farangs instead of Japanese tycoons and accidentally gave us a menu in Japanese while smirking at us as if to say "now what cheapos?|" I will never forget her face when I calmly read and translated the menu for my friends and then told her in polite Japanese exactly what we wanted......(I studied Japanese in University, at least for once it turned out to be useful) I wished I'd had a camera though, as the mamasan looked like she had to swallow a live python at the time have fun guys

Every nation has its own inflated and distorted perception of itself and the Thai nation is no different in that. I am told that the dormant ashes of nationalism were actively fanned into the flames that we see today from about 1932 since most people in the country had no perception of Thailand as being a nation and the allegiance to the monarchy was not felt by the majority of people. The snobbery that lighter-skinned Thais show for darker skinned Thais is class-based with the general assumption that a darker skinned person is a member of a social group who have worked for generations in the sun and so are not educated nor skilled. Whether this stemmed from when the Chinese immigrants came and started to buy out the rice fields and industry from under the indigenous Thais before or as they were inter-marrying, I don't know. But it has certainly grown and has become ingrained in people's thinking.....hence the thousand and one products for whitening the skin. There certainly is discrimination against foreigners with darker skin.......some of this is based on past visitors behaviour...............some of it is based on the ladies' preferences and dislikes, although there are some ladies who prefer darker skinned visitors and will avoid going with "white" people. As for the barring of Thai males from bars, particularly Go-Go bars and massage places, I would surmise that that stems from a fear of some girls that they would be recognised and word would get home to family and friends about the nature of their work. Or it could be stemming from a measure to prevent a Thai guy from searching for a lady who does not want to be found by a family member or a friend or member of the village to be working. Back-packers are discriminated against as are low-budget tourists by clubs that just keep their prices high. There are many places where you would not be welcome if you are not Japanese or Korean. You'll find this level of discrimination in different forms in every part of the world. It's a fact of life and if you find yourself on the sharp end of it somewhere, it may hurt. But I think the best policy is not to take it personally and to move on and find yourself a comfortable place in which you are made to feel welcome, as opposed to drawing up battle lines for assault in an attempt to change people's attitudes overnight.
