It is true though, skin tone is a serious subject among Thais, I have had countless encounters based on this issue. My main girl for a while was of the darker skinned variety and whenever we were meeting a friend and his girl for dinner/drinks, the first que she would ask me is "is she lighter skinned than me?" and based on the response she would alter her clothes, attitude and mood.

My wife has been her ein the U.S. for almost 2 years now. She still asks if her skin is lighter than it used to be.
And all this after she realized that most people here can't find Thailand on a map let alone NO ONE knows what Isaan is.
Truth be told, there are many places here in the U.S. that frown upon undersressed or even people that don't look normal... that can mean skin color, size, drawl, etc..... after all, a redneck is a redneck....
Think about it, you don't find lower socio economic people eating at higher end places, even if they have the money..... It is the same all over the world, just more over in someplaces than others.

Yes, we like to think so, and broadly this is true, especially of the free-lance arrangement go-go dancers not tied to the bar.
But not in every bar. If the mamasan has her eye on a low number of bar-fines for the month, excuses will not be acceptable to her and miraculously, without a calculator or diary, she will be able to reveal a memory that will help her determine exactly on which day each of her ladies menstruate.
As for the headache, the lady will continue to have that whether she is supine, prone or in an upright position, so that doesn't wash either. The lady's only hope is that no-one will have noticed the guy asking to bar-fine her.
I conduct negotiations directly with the lady every time. They prefer that mostly. And I have never involved, not would I ever involve a third party to what is said privately between us.
Whether the lady decided herself or not to reveal the details of our discussion, is entirely up to her. If she owes money in the bar or to the bar for being sick or absent earlier in the month, I wouldn't like to think that what I give to her would immediately be creamed off by the mamasan.
I'm sure there must be some good mamasans who care for their ladies if and when they choose to. Most of the ones that I have had the displeasure of knowing, are hard-nosed, blood-sucking, exploitative and scamming parasites. It is because of these special qualities, that not every lady is suited to such employment.

I agree with JW 100%, NEVER should a third party be involved with issues of what the BGs call "body price". In fact, I believe this so strongly that on my recent trip I got out of the cab before my hotel (and left the girl in there) when she started discussing body price (in Thai) in a loud voice so the cab driver could hear...I just said "have you no dignity?", told the cab to stop, and got out.

Quack Quack,we certainly have our share of "Aussie Goons" in Australia,but it is by no means clear that the recent attacks on Indian nationals in Melbourne were racially motivated.
There is perhaps more evidence to suggest that the attacks were just old fashioned robbery on apparently vulnerable targets.

Discrimination is encountered more often in the Soi Cowboy and NEP bars but rarely, if ever, at Patpong bars. This may tie in with what some posters have noted here about the inherent racism among lighter skin Thais as opposed to their darker skinned compatriots. The bars in PP generally feature dark skinned, rustic girls, which might explain the absence of discrimination towards dark skinned clients, although at QC I have been serviced several times by one light-skinned girl of amazing pulchritude. Virtually every bar in PP has a number of hailers stationed outside who beseech people of all colours to come in.
This is not the case on the Cowboy strip where coloured passers-by are not hailed. Very likely this has to do with business interests and is a result of the general perception that people with these "looks" either misbehave or do not spend well. Thus at times I find the curtains dropping shut when I turn to go inside a particular bar or the guy outside jutting out his arm with a terse "member only." At Pretty Lady, where I go regularly, a guy once almost barred me and was stopped in the nick of time by the mamasan who just happened to emerge at that very moment.
By contrast, I find the PP bars and mamasans more friendly, and their dark skinned girls more enthusiastic and unencumbered by considerations of colour. They get my custom. Period.

I witnessed over the years many woman point blank refusing to go with darker skinned men (usually Indians )
Thais at the airport have allowed Westerners fast passage while letting Indians wait.
Once I was allowed through a diplomatic line just to piss off the indians waiting ahead of me.
Girls on beach road were seen ignoring approaching Indian Men.
Go Gos I went to stopped some at the door.
Beer bar girls joked with me that Indians were tipped off by me to go there (as if they were the scum of the earth)
7/11 girl refused to help an Indian man with a Telephone card who had problem seeing the number, that she had sold him.
Why ?
Bar girls correctly like men to be clean.
Most come from the north where washing is a ritual never put off, and its frequent and strict- IE even in a storm or if a snake was in the wash room an hour back.
Middle eastern men and Indians are said (by them ) To smell.
More Educated Thais know about their Caste system which makes Farmers ofeten seen as Lower caste.
Being often aware of That - they inturn show contempt for indians.
Skin color is also a factor-
"i not like Black" is often said by girls.
""I not do India"..is often said by girls.
But the more Middle class Indians do get accepted easier- and the educated ones also.
But unfortunately Racism is entrenched in Thailand.
I noticed recently a Major food Chain In Australia Ran a prime time commericial on promoting Indian food for a family (for two weeks while the Delhi Games were on)
Australians on a whole are not racist towards indians.

Australia does have pockets of Racism - but it is not widely accepted across the broader community.

Stands to reason. What does happen indeed is a few instances of racist attacks get so magnified in the public eye as to drag down an entire people or country into the racist category. At the height of the attacks on Indian students I remember there were quite a few Indians settled in Australia who made a public appeal not to dub Australia as racist because it was their experience that it wasn't.
Same same Thailand. Just because a few bars and bar girls discriminate against Indians, Middle Eastern men, etc is no reason to dub Thais racist. Thais on the whole are not racist. There are just different people with different views, as anywhere in the world. I remember a cab driver in Bangkok telling me he was more comfortable with Indians than farangs because farangs queer the pitch for Thai guys by spoiling Thai girls with marriage and big money, whereas Indians just f***, pay and f*** off, no marriage.
I do not accept Valetta's argument that the attacks in Australia on Indian students were just robbery attacks. They were very much racist but it is also necessary to see those attacks as restricted to a certain class of perpetrators, rather than call the entire nation racist.
One New Zealand TV commentator got the famed Indian goat during the Commonwealth Games when he ridiculed an Indian politician's name in vulgar fashion. Not many Indians called New Zealanders racist. Because we know they aren't.
Indians of late have certainly taken a liking to kangaroo curry in cricket. Life's good
