I had some good times in Thermae last week..
Myself and a fellow mongerer both speak Japanese quite well and we started speaking Japanese to the ladies.. Well the look of shock on their faces was priceless!!!!!!!!!

haam sup, I am a fan and a supporter of yours too, but I have to voice some support for Vox here, as I often find the average falang's lack of dress and decorum in BKK quite disturbing, if not downright disrespectful. It has less to do with wearing shorts in the city (although I never would), than with a general slovenliness and lack of care.
I feel at times that falangs in BKK are like the spoiled children of overly tolerant parents. Children who think it is okay to crayon all over the walls of public places, and touch and fondle all the produce at will, who think that because mom and pop never say no, that it is acceptable behavior to run around with their pants down around their ankles, foaming and frothing at the mouth, until they drop from pure exhaustion....

Quim, you're preaching to the choir.
I agree, and am often embarrassed by the appearance and behavior of some of my countrymen in Thailand.
My problem is with the invective and belligerence expressed in Vox's post. I've met a few guys with that attitude, and in the end, I'd rather share a beer with a good-natured, yet slovenly, farang in shorts, than with a pompous, arrogant narcissist, regardless of where he shops, and how good he thinks he looks in black. 
Call me particular.

About speaking Japanese at Thermae:
This a common trick by farang trying to impress upon the Thermae girls or being "cute" (have done it myself). I am surprised that any of these experienced seen-it-all-heard-it-all beauties reacted with "shock", rather it would be with bored méprise or, at best, minimally polite indifference, like when hearing somebody repeating the same funny story.

hmmm, I find bluber's constantly supercilious attitude towards other posters somewhat dégueulasse et sans classe.
I highly doubt that the thermae girls hear japanese spoken by non-japanese on a regular basis. It happens, no doubt, but it is hardly common or worn.

In fact that's the only reason I am at this site at all. But the term "constantly" should be modified by considering the low frequency of my posting, about once every eight months or so. Let's make it once every two or three years. No? OK see you in five years.
"dégueulasse" is out of style, a too strong word for what you aim tp say.
"Sans classe"? On a site like this the concept of "classe" has no relevance whatsoever.

It just amaze me how many of you are "suprised" to see some tourist wearing shorts in the city..i mean...its a tropical country here you know?
So unless your "style" is to sweat like a pig (and smell accordingly), wearing long pants, closed leather shoe (why not try moonboots next time? black one are real classy LOL) and shirts with long sleeves + of course a necktie is a very good idea to impress the girls...they will wonder how you survive dressed like this...
At the moment even the Thai are complaining about the heat and some are wearing shorts and sandals...
