madfrog, mon ami, I do, sadly, sweat like a human (pigs, although they possess sweat glands, don't actually sweat much; which is why they tend to roll in the mud or water, to cool down). Thankfully, I do not smell much when I sweat, unless I am wearing wool. Which is rare, if never, in LOS.
But I just can't bring myself to wear shorts in the city, no matter how hot it is. Call my british, but I just feel that a gentleman should be dressed appropriately. And the city calls for hiding my hairy legs, muscular and masculine though they may be.
All that said, if you, good foufrog, or anyone else, wants to wear shorts to Thermae, I would not look askance at that. Truth be told, I would hardly notice, as my eyes belong to the anime dolls lining the walls. Each, fashion wise as otherwise, to their sweet sweaty own.

madfrog, I agree entirely, cleanliness and, if I may add, behaving appropriately, is far more important than whether someone is sporting some naked kneecaps. Hairy or not.
The thing is, shorts can be, let's face it, an indication of a certain lack of respect for one's surroundings. Not that I am not suggesting that Thermae is akin to a buddhist temple, but all the same...
I just think that if we expect TGs to dress up for us, we had better damn well dress up a little for them. And most Japanese men, whether they have a choice in it or not (cultural dictates), tend to err on the side of "dressing up", which, without getting into the whole debate about whether that is "gay" or not, makes them often slightly more "attractive" than the average pasty punter in britches.

When I am conducting business in Bangkok I dress appropriately for that occassion. When I am relaxing my choice of clothing is different. Frankly, I am not impressed by where you shop, but if it gives you pleasure than good for you. The area's around much of the P4P places are not particularly formal and I, even after 15 years of spending time in BKK and hearing all the comments from guys like you, am not at all self conscious about wearing shorts. I think you will find the girls care most about a guy who treats them well, makes them laugh, has good personal hygiene and a lot of money (not necessarily in that order) and less about the "quality" of his dress. For instance, I think they would rather have a clean man in shorts that a well dressed man who stinks. I am sure you have good hygiene and dress well to boot and for that I take no offense and only hope you will allow me my comfort as well with out being critical because my style and comfort is different than yours. Just because I think it matters to you, I will tell you that my relaxing clothing is name brand stuff, it just happens to be casual. And by the way, its much easier for that lovely new acquaintance to run her hand up the leg of your shorts than up the leg of long pants. Have a good but formal life.

Good post Wanderingsam.
Pretty much echoes my outlook on Bangkok. I spent a long time in military uniform and am dressed smart on a daily basis at work, so enjoy relaxing in shorts during 'down time'.
I believe that you can be smart but casual.
And agree totally that for the girls, cleanliness and the way you behave towards them is far more important than what you are wearing.

I am sure that color doesn't matter to comfort but you frighten me with a pith helmet! But I am sure you are only joking, or as they say taking the pith.......That old movie clip with Spencer Tracy makes me want to watch that movie. Maybe on the next flight to BKK.
BS, we all spend too much of our lives in uniforms, military or otherwise. Enjoy while we can enjoy, that is my current philosophy.

I have to go with Sam here. Yes, there is a "job interview" involved, but she's the one being interviewed, and yes, I do add/subtract points for her attire. Not fair, but then, the world's not fair.
I like shorts; they're comfortable. Besides, they're one of the best ways to combat jock itch, and I'm sure if she's given a choice between a customer wearing shorts and clean to one wearing slacks and a raging case of jock itch, I figure the former will trump.
But I'm just guessing
