Well, Eric, after 5 years in NYC (Blue Note etc.. ) and 10 in Chicago (Back Room, Green Mill....), I know a decent jazz venue when I trip over one!!

The first time I was at the Sheraton seems there is a guy who was in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra present and he got up and played 2 songs. an 80yo guy who could hardly get up on the stage. but with the microphone and trumpet in hand this guy really took off. What a show!!.

OK, poskat, I apoligize for that ignorant comment. I do not know you that well, great to find out you are into quality music.

To be frank, I have not looked really hard to find decent concerts. But as I said, here in Oslo (Norway) I could almost just pop into any random joint.

I will try to do some more research before my next visit (not too long).

As others have stated, Brown Sugar is worth a visit. Intimate atmosphere, often very good music, but generally poor service and equally poor food. Saxophone Pub near Victory Monument also worth a visit, but more a rythm and blues place, also with lousy food.

One place that hasn't been mentioned is Fabb Italian Restaurant and Jazz Club in the Mercury Tower on Ploenchit Road. This place has quite good food (I recommend the rack of lamb), and the easy listening resident band is great for the digestion. Dance floor included, but not the kind of place a bar girl will feel comfortable in (and no thai food on the menu either).

However, if you like to get your kicks on Route 66, then you'll enjoy this place, and their 'Bye Bye Blackbird' closing rendition is worth around staying for, long after you've finished your Creme Brulee.

unfortunately, Fabb restaurant is now closed. they moved to Hua Hin. I found this out in Feb when I took a jazzy TG there, well not there actually.

So is it fair to assume that if I am searching for QUALITY Jazz with a superb atmosphere and top notch musicians the Bamboo the Oriental may be my best bet????

The jazz scene isn't all that great here to be honest. BUT for a smoky, noisy crowded kind of place, Brown Sugar is pretty high on the list on Soi Sarasin. The farang guitarist, mario, is excellent and the bass player is Pong Wongvichien who is one of the local heavies... A very nice alternative is The Studio Bar in the Pathumwan Princess Hotel [walk straight through MBK and into the hotel]. Currently they have a trio, including bass, piano and singer that IS jazz and NOT cheesy pop junk. Nice wine list and ask for a Pisco Sour.
Bamboo Bar? VERY pricey. Sheraton can be really good, they tend to rotate through bands a bit faster than other places.

I've been to Saxophone Pub, but not since about 2006. Have things changed much?

I got (back) into blues after visiting Cotton Club in Shanghai a little while ago. Big Mama and the band blew me away...that and walking outside to 5 inches of snow, made it an evening to remember.

But back to Bangkok...admittedly this is a jazz thread and I'm really after info on somewhere to listen to blues, so forgive my thread-jacking.

Can anyone shed any light? The last post prior to this one is from almost 3 years ago, and I figure things may have changed a little bit. Thanks in advance.

There's one intersting spot for live Jazz nowadays. It's not a club but a garden restaurant, so more for some relaxed atmosphere during dinner, not later in the night. They have a fairly good lively Jazz band with singer. It's the "Rosabieng" restaurant in Soi 11 opposite of the Ambassador hotel...

Don't mix it up with the Sanzibar garden restaurant closer to Sukhumvit wich also has a band and singer but is more the easy listening type... Not really bad but not real Jazz either...

QQ, c'mon... Sheraton Sukh. does some serious main stream Jazz at times... depending on the artist of course... Hope you went upstairs to the Jazz club, not groundfloor to Bar Su or the old boring FL place before... And the famous Oriental bar is a nice place as well...

This Rosabieng restaurant is most of all different as another type of venue... If you look for excellent Jazz in a good club it's not the right thing... But if you want to listen to some inspired and not routine burried life Jazz music while dining - it's a nice option... Have a try... They never fail to surprise by-passers and make them listen for a while... Too bad the restaurant isn't really impressive... ok at best...
