Really? When and where did you last check that number? Because according to the numbers I can find, Thailand total exports stand at around US$ 140 plus billions, while revenue from foreign visitors comes to slightly over US$ 10 billion (so more like 8% instead of 30%).

Remember though that of that $10 billion a large percentage comes from harried dads, fat mums, and their screaming kids. These are the folks that occupy the better hotels, eat at the more expensive restaurants, take cheesy tours, and buy cheap knock-offs from the local vendors. They generally do not go to clubs and bars all night (most probably get home before midnight).
It would be interesting to see exactly what percentage of the tourist revenue comes from bars and discos, I would suspect that it is not that significant.
That being said if you punters really want to test the law, 'vote with your feet' take your business to the PI, VN, or Cambodia. Who knows (for the cheap charlies) you might even get a better deal in those places...

Yes, I would be very curious to see how MP owners, small and large, report income and salaries for tax purposes.
Seeing how it's mostly in undeclared cash, there should be little problem for taxes, so far as I know.
And I also doubt if the girls are "declared employees", thus granting them rights such as an insurance card, which the company has to pay half of. This being the case, the owners probably have to pay a 3% "services" withholding on anybody they declare as having paid money out to (which is of course cheaper than listing it as profit, which would subject it to 15%).
But since there is, as I said, no way of keeping track of customers payments (income), this is all moot. That being said, the tax office does send a representative to stand all day at certain businesses and literally count the customers, if there is a questionable amount being reported, believe it or not. However, I doubt if that happens at massage parlors.
What this all means, though, is that it's impossible to get accurate statistics for the take-in money (unless you're the owner) on most of these places, as far as I can figure. Though I too have read the 8% quoted by S M E G M A, though of course that involves many, many industries.
So besides the economic questions in debate here... Why do I want to know? One can dream...

Actually, some of these macro numbers are not that difficult to figure, regardless of being reported or not. You can even figure the balance of the net value of goods being smuggled in or out of a country by looking among other things at the "errors and omissions" and the "current balance" accounts of the central bank of a country.
Net foreign income/outflow is one of the easiest accounts to figure for any country -even in the presence of FX controls.
Any real economist in da house that can explain it easily to the masses?
