You stopped going to the Pong when they put the night market in? That was more than 15 years ago, because it was in when I arrived here.
And there is no night market on Parpong 2, only on Patpong 1. So what's your excuse on Patpong 2?
Same applies to the two cross streets between 1 and 2. No night market. So, about half of the bars in the Pong are accessible without dealing with the market at all. Anyway all one has to do is skirt it or cross it.
While the general quality of the Patpong girls has declined, so has the gquality of the girls at Nana and Cowboy. So, Patpong still has the best (not counting Soi 33). Clinton Plaza is GONE, Asoke Plaza is a joke. So, to deny oneself the Pong, or to restrict the Pong to the lousy KG bars, is very sad indeed.
Anyway the Pong has changed and changed again and again in 15 years. The bookstore has been gone a LONG time, but Superstar is still there minus the disco, Goldfingers is still there, and they are still hassle free,
Grand Prix? That was Rick Maynard's place way back before the Dawn of Time. One might as well evoke memories of the Texxas Lone Star and the Mississippi Queen...decades ago. Too many to mention. The Texxan survives in Washington Square and the MQ in Pattaya.

This may be just a case of a single rogue corrupt manager and not indicative of corporate sanctioned scamming, but it is still a significant ding in their reputation.

As far as I am concerned the KG doesn't have any good reputation to damage.
They are an offesnsively exploitative bunch of bars.
If I patronize a bar I do not want to be "processed" out of my money. I expect to be treated well, not pushed and prodded and timed. If I want to sip a single drink that's up to me. (Never happens!) I know how to make the girls laugh and they never have to ask for a LD. The mamasan gets a drink from me and if she isn't busy I talk to her and butter her up. In return, I expect decent service, courtesy, no stuffing of my cup, and if I want to talk to a dancer, up to me. The bar fine ought to be a flat rate and not adjustable as at KG depending on how many drinks you already bought.
Any bar anywhere that doesn't live up to these minimum standards will never get my patronage again.
ALL of the KG bars violate this standard grossly. So IMHO they are a lousy group to point newbies at; the phony "safety" issue is overblown. If a newbie can't remember Goldfingers, Rififi, Superstar, or tell the difference between Superstar and Super Queen, they I don't think they can find Silom Road if they were standing in front of the Dusit Thani and looking west.
Personally I find show bars dull and repititious and even the "safe" ones usually have only beer and one brand of it at that -- usually Singha Gold which is buffalo piss watered down. However, if there needs to be a rule of thumb then "Don't go into any upstairs show bar, unless you can remember Penthouse, Super Girls and Lipstick which are safe." There need be no warning about non show bars upstairs, such as BJ bars or the like.
A show bar will have a menu mentioning frogs and snakes and razor blades and darts/balloons and Marksalots and bananas etc etc. No such menu, it's probably NOT a show bar.
Trink the aging Fink regularly mentions which places charge for "entertainment" as well as for drinks. That is his euphemism for the ripoff bad show bars.

Loathe as I am to agree with CJ, he IS right about the King's group of bars. A more surly bunch of BG's, hostesses and waiters I have not come across in Bkk.
I was once approached by a non-katoey BG in KGII. The first words out of her mouth were not 'where you from?', 'what your name?' or even 'you holiday Thailand?' but 'you buy me Cola?'.
Now I don't mind buying BG's drinks (IF I like them), but at least try to make me feel welcome. All it takes is a few words. After refusing her request, she simply turned her back and headed off to the nearby Japanese. ?
Avoid King's Group like the plague.
My point about the other bars was that I couldn't see a single even half-decent BG in any of those bars. Maybe I went on the wrong night and they had all been bar-fined, but there should still have been a few nice ones left.
They all just seemed so old and tired which is a shame as those places did have a certain atmosphere lacking in so many Nana & Cowboy bars.
My regular routine was Goldfinger, across to Superstar then one for the road in Safari. I tried that (quite) a few months back for old times sake. Unfortunately, it just made me long for Nana & Cowboy.
Funny thing though, there was Randy in his usual position knocking them back with his mate- the Oriental guy who looks like he could have been a Vietnamese scout for the U.S. Army. ?Exactly the same scene as when I was previously there, about 10 years ago. Weird!
By the way, weren't all the best bars on Patpong 1? Patpong 2 only had a few go-go places as I recall and was mostly beer bars. Good for watching video movies though.
I can't remember there being any decent Go-Go joints on PP2. Riffifi was and still is, a dump.
Guess we have vastly different tastes in BG's as I think the quality of girls in Nana and Cowboy has increased drastically. The opposite in Patpong. Sad, as PP does have a certain vibe and atmosphere. Even with that bloody street market.
Also, check out the smarts on 'Pantagruel'. I take it you haven't been reading Tom Clancy or Wilbur Smith?

A short field report from an "upstairs" bar in the Pong:
For better or worse, my traveling partner in crime and I have made a habit of frequenting The Firecat, which is a sleazy upstairs showbar. Some have told me that this is famous as a clip joint. But surprisingly we've always been treated well. Our strategy has been to tip the mamasan when we show up (think her name is "Yuee" ) and chat with the other two (a lesbian pair) that seem somehow also connected with the joint.
Yuee always makes sure we have great seats. My buddy has shorttimed the dart shooter ("Oy" ), and they seem to get along famously -- when she's offstage she's usually lying at his side with her head in his lap (smiling, not BJ, honest!). I've become friends with "Oy's" buddy and fellow performer -- she's a bit fat for me, so I've only bought her a beer and laughed with her (ST'd another lady there, tiny little thing with a tuberculur cough).
So, for what it's worth, we have lived tell about "an upstairs bar."

The King Groups procedure of "ripp off" differs from those (few) other patpong ripp offs, it happens systematically, (as everything in the kings empire, I would consider them as the mc donalds part of patpong) at the end, systematically or not the result in your purse is the same. I could recommend almost every upstair bar on soi 2, atmosphere, nice girls, reasonable prices....

3 experiences,all on the same night.
only time i ever went to Patpong and with BGGF.
she wanted to compare the go-go's with her own.
downstairs go-go first and no problems,my girl chatted to the other girls and i bought a few drinks whilst looking at the dancers.
next was an upstairs one and watched the show,but had seen them all in Phuket before.
one of the girls approached sat with us(naked,this did'nt happen in Phuket).
seemed she came from same town as my girl,so i bought a drink for her.
but i soon got pestered by other women and we left.
thirdly, a man approached us on the street and talked about a 'special bar' and we(i )was convinced.
down many alleys and things and he knocked on the door and it was unlocked.
upstairs we went and the promise of 'special shows' never materialised.
we went to leave and i 'check bin'.
800 baht for 1 coke and 1 beer !!!!!!!!!.
refused to pay and a stand-off was soon established.
i threatened them with the tourist police and made a move for the door and was stopped by 2 quite burly thai men.
finally offered 300,still an inflated price but was still turned down,they wanted 800.
my girl got a bit worried and got her wallet out and paid the 800 and we got out.
i really had a go at her,but she said she had been scared and i realised later perhaps it was the best thing,things could have got nasty.
i gave her the 800 back,so i paid in the end.
should have gone to the police,but was a bit of a newbie to BKK.
but i've seen the other side of the coin.
we were in one upstairs bar,no problems,chatting with a couple of the girls and a group of 4 yorkshiremen walked in.
they were immediately pounced upon by a bevy of naked ladies and asked for LD's.
2 of them whipped their dicks out and said 'suck this' and you get a drink.
when they were both finished,they paid their bill and left without buying the LD.
the girls were pissed off and i was disgusted for 2 reasons.
firstly they were my fellow country men and bought disgrace on my country and it happened within 5 feet of where i was sitting.
i did'nt want to see it.
