Burlesque
I trundled into Long Gun (Soi Cowboy) last week and caught part of the show. It was then that I realised just how total the Angelwitch effect has been on the go-go scene, particularly in the Sukhumvit area.
Long Gun I always thought of as a place with the ìtourist showsî involving whistles, coloured string, razor blades (wince) and unfortunate marine life. Suddenly I was watching a show that was fun and raunchy, and enjoying it! ìBurlesque,î summed up my companion. And he was right. This was from the Crazy Horse school, not the Patpong school.
That got me thinking back, as well as about what is going on now. When I was a novice to the joys of Thailand I enjoyed the go-gos of Patpong and seldom went East where Nana Plaza was just starting, and Soi Cowboy was definitely passÈ. There were then, as there are now, mainly go-gos in which the feature is the girls and the dancing. And those bikini-clad girls were all that the punters really wanted to see. Upstairs there were the ìpussy showsî as they are called and there was also a couple that performed a live sex show. Quite remarkably this couple performed several times a night in various places, getting themselves into a variety of positions whilst still plugged in. Certainly a show worth seeing once, at least. The pussy shows were all fairly basic and, as now, when youíve seen one youíve seen ëem all. The exception was the Firecat bar that put on a variety of shows, which included a tuk tuk and mild bondage. Although I seem to recall one of Firecatís main attractions was the hoard of little girls who ran around wearing remarkably little. They did not need touts in those days.
Next came the era of the lesbian show. I am not quite certain who started it, or where, but for a while that was all the rage. These shows became more and more risquÈ and there was little doubt that the girls often enjoyed the performance. Well that was until the props became bigger and bigger. Then along came Purachai and shows were halted over night. Even now displaying parts of the female anatomy that was openly on view a couple of years ago is verboten.
It was not as a result of this clamp down that Angelwitch started shows, although it is quite likely that the banning of nudity got Matt and Pin thinking about what they should do. It is only a little over a year ago the Angelwitch shows started. Suddenly here was a real standard that owed more to burlesque than crude displays of forbidden parts of the anatomy. Here was a show that would compete, and be permitted, in most countries. And of course it packed them in. The competitors made the usual move and reported the show to the police. I would like to think that for once the Thai police engaged brain and realised that this form of show was not only acceptable but vastly superior to the crude ìsexî shows previously tolerated. Angelwitch has been left alone and so they should be for they are contributing to creating an (almost) acceptable nightlife.
I took a trip around Patpong last night and needless to say the Angelwitch effect has not yet got that far. Some bored and remarkably polite touts were peddling the usual pussy shows. The only point of note was that Firecat is now called Wildcat. I did not need to climb the stairs of that mini Everest as a tout down below displayed the list of shows on a card. I asked about the tuk tuk and was told ìYou go up!î Clearly the tuk tuk has gone into retirement, or more likely is carrying unsuspecting female backpackers around town.
In Soi Cowboy the three bars that currently do shows are all influenced by the AW effect. Apart from Long Gun, Susie Wongís and Shebaís have a few selected shows and they are clearly more burlesque than pussy, even if the beaver is on display.
Back at the starting point of this there is still remarkably little parodying of the AW shows. The other main show bars (Hollywood Strip and Hollywood Two above Angelwitch) have stuck to the old format of showers and lesbian acts, even though police restrictions stopped nudity. And to be fair those shows work. Elsewhere Lollipop, who started shows of the Patpong kind, is now suffering a temporary closure order. Pretty much the same happened to Playschool, although the ìwide belt and hat onlyî costume may have been burlesque it failed to cover the bits that Lumpini police expect to be covered.
The main reason little changes in Nana Plaza is because the Crown Group dominates and until recently their management (if indeed that is the word) was pedestrian at best. But now they have a new captain at the tiller there are rumours that they want to develop shows on the AW format. However, I doubt they will commit the resources to making the shows work. I expect it will be as in Pattaya where several bars have tried to work the Angelwitch shows, one even asked AW to help, but what they would not do is pay the dancers for rehearsals. In addition understudies and back ups have to be trained (and paid). The Angelwitch show dancers receive 15,000 Baht per month. So running good burlesque is not cheap, however if it is good enough it will fill the house. Then the next question must be; how many houses will it fill if several are doing it? My guess is that in Nana Plaza only Angelwitch have the personnel (in Pin) and commitment (in Matt) to train and maintain a high enough standard. Elsewhere we will see, although the three Soi Cowboy bars doing shows seem to be on track to getting it right.

hello all
I like to see a combination of how the strip clubs in the USA are with the P4P action in thailand. I believe most guys in here that are from the USA or Canada have been to a strip club. However while the girls for the most part are totally hot you can't even touch them and take out is not on the menu inless you pay a out rages price. I like to see a club that has a few stages with 1-2 dancers on it doing actually exotic danceing instead of 15 girls up there shuffling back and forth with not much entusiasim. However intead of the 20 dollar lap dances you get in the usa with No touching you can get the same ST or LT girl of your choice and the gratutitus gropeing of the girls like you always get . Also I like to see the girls in high heals not running shoes or go go boots and not all wearing the same color or style dance outfits. also get rid of the staduim seating and put in tables and chairs . Also and this is the one I don't like the most about how it is now . Have the girls walk up to your table and ask to sit down instead of just ploping right there uninvited . I think this would be the greatest place ever with those ajustments

I agree with a lot of what you say, some other things wouldn't be quite to my taste - but then so what? How it is possible to have a venue which appeals to everybody? I think what we'd all like to see is a bit more differentiation and originality - and we're probably all agreed that the 'hostessing' aspect of the GG bars is the thing that needs the most work.
Re the 15 shufflers, I don't think you can eliminate this entirely without losing the core go-go concept - which is surely to let the punters get a good view of the merchandise. Then again, why not try something that is like a hybrid of a BB and a GG - or, for that matter, any of a 101 other possible formulae?
It's the endless copy-catting I find depressing. How unimaginative of the Crown Group that they can't think of anything to do except try to copy Angelwitch. A chain like this should be well-placed to do its own experimenting. Ý

Isn't the Crown Group farang-owned and managed? I think most of the NEP bars are.
I have a feeling that most of the PP bars are Thai-owned, but many of these are farang-managed too.

Can't say about the PP (Patpong right?) because I hate the f_cking daylights out of that shithole. Which means, sorry, haven't been lately.
It's hard as hell to keep track of who owns what. Just seeing a farang face behind the bar means little. He could be a hired manager. Or a minority partner managing the place, or a non-managing partner just getting a pencil.
Copy-copy will remain the order of the day. The reason for that is most innovations are doomed from the start because nobody really thought them through. Look at the giant flop Cascade was. "Ooooh, we'll do water!"
Who cares? It's always going to be about titties and beer. The few bars that do shows may be full some of the time but I'd bet that they aren't really doing a lot better in the long run, maybe just pulling enough extra traffic to get through lean times in somewhat better shape. Three months into boom times when they come again and all bars will be back on an even footing.
And the phrase should be "Human see, human do." Please.

Hello all
HERMANOLOBO: The goods are still on display if you will but just spread out to 3 stages with 1-2 girls on each. shorten the time the girls have to be on stage and rotate accordigly. You know like the Strip clubs here in the USA. If the girls are wearing different dance outfits then the view changes every few songs which always leads to anticapation on the viewers. This would help the bar keep Costumers in the bar cause they don't get to see everything that it has to offer all at once. OH well guess someone with some Cash could try it since I am not ever going to be rich enough to
