I agree with ChinaSailor's observations. Sadly, there are more 'normals' around, cluttering up Sukhumvit. Hotels are booked with bovine families, couples, women all grazing on the mindless shopping. A few years ago, you wouldn't see that many farang at MBK. Now it's their Mecca. Streetstalls go on selling clothes long into the night now on Sukhumvit, turning it into another Patpong market. You never used to see many western women or couples in Nana and Soi Cowboy either. Now even the after-hours stalls are full of the gawping idiots. In Tops, Soi 19, I notice many western women doing the kind of shopping that obviously indicates they're living here. Same on the skytrain. I'm not a "women must stay in the kitchen" sort of guy but I fear Thailand is becoming too comfortable and feminised. You can get that anywhere else in the world. Please not here. Girl-friendly Hotels in prime monger areas are often booked up. I don't know why the mindless c***s choose to stay in red light district when their prime concern is stupid shopping but they do. Pattaya's Walking Street is chock-a-block with grazing 'family' tourists. Why? I wish they'd all f*** off somewhere else. How about Dubai? They can get a sun tan and shop. That's all they really want.

I'm sure once there's a new police chief for Lumpini, and Chalerm's face loss will blow over, the closing times will be relaxed again. I mean, come on, these 'crack downs' (don't make me laugh) only ever last 2-3 months, before they start getting relaxed, or ignored)

As you may have noted it is a midnight closedown on lower suk whilst it actually is open longer on Cowboy and soi 33? If it has any validity or not I dont know but someone told me it is because "someone" wants to push business away from NEP - since that place is wanted for a big time hotel in the near future?! Just for arguements sake: what if also the after all rather shabby soi Cowboy street is considered to be of much better value for a highrising building - as well as NEP? Just look at asoke plaza where today the new massive building is soon ready! So that would close down two major "attractions" and what about the remaining PatPong?! Anyone more than me that believes that the strategy is to get rid of the usual mongering places and instead replacing it with tall buildings, more and more expensive hotels and shopping centers. Thus luring the arab and russkie visitors who are not customers to "our" places anyway - and will bring in better money? Same for Walking Street and Pattaya as such. Not only me (who is of course insignificant) but many other of former visitors are now giving the place a "no-go" status because of many reasons. Thus as someone wrote the higher number of totally different visitors to be seen there in a more and more expensive and crime infected town! Not that it matters much to me. I have a great little gal and know of many other fun places to visit! As for the early closures and raids: they REALLY are trying hard to attract the important tourist industry, arent they?! Duh.....

Sounds to me more like 'someone' got pissed off because 'someone else' made disparaging (but mostly true) remarks about their son, so now all the bars in 'someone else's' district are being penalized more, than the bars elsewhere. Isn't it only bars in the Lumpini jurisdiction being affected stricter? (well, excepting places like The Ritz, which are essentially untouchable) Never assume some vast sweeping conspiracy, when general stupidity and incompetence form a far better explanation - I think this is one of those cases.

You too delude yourself that the sex tourism industry would represent a significant part of the economy, or even a segment of the economy a government cares about. What you have described, which is the ever increasing number of mom 'n' pop tourists, is exactly what Thailand wants, and you seem to be confirmed their plans are working... and these folks DO bring more money, per capita, into the industry - as opposed to most cheap charlie sex tourists quibbling over 5-10 baht on their beer...

I thought the reason for the closing crackdown was because it was the only way the Interior Minister could think of to control his kids.
