In general, I've had pretty good luck at Thermae. People complain about the downscale atmosphere, and that's true, but there are some gems there. When I make the rounds, about 95% of them are not very good, but 5% of them are very attractive. I've found that if I negotiate a sliding scale, say 1,000B for ST, but with a tip of 500 to 1,000B if I like the service, I am usually satisfied. I talk to them to see if they're enthusiastic, then negotiate, then back to the hotel. It helps to agree on services they will perform. I don't talk about the services right away, but first have general conversation. If I like them as we talk, I negotiate. It works for me.

Tip if you like the service ?? AHH surely the agreed price was for good service? so tip should only be for EXCEPTIONAL service.
Negotiations should be for half money up front and other half after agreed services are rendered as per service level agreement.
Get a bad burger from maccas and you'll be screaming for your money back,, so why not same with the ladies?

You're right. Tip is for exceptional service. However, I would never pay half up-front. I pay after service. If service was just OK, I'll tip the agreed minimum, say 1,000 or 1,500 baht. If service was exceptional, I'll give her an additional 500 or 1,000. Using this technique, I've found that 70% of the time, I'll get exceptional service. For the other 30%, I'll save some baht.
Besides the negotiating technique, I think being polite and enthusiastic and generally treating her well helps to receive exceptional service.

I understand your intention to get and give a fair business deal, Mel. But as far as I can imagine it, I think this handling of the encounters would go far in squelching any GFE. And GFE is what makes the experience with Thai working girls so desirable and wonderful, in my opinion.
It might work for you though, and you might be experiencing all kinds of sweet GFE with this technique, however I don't think it will fit into my mode of operation.
