I agree that a more "normal" tourist display is of interest to the country and I do not oppose that in fact. But even "normal" visitors go out for fun and bars and discos or whatever - and if these places close earlier than in a mormon city - perhaps that would distract the interest from many visitors?!
And while we are at the subject: - (please note that I am not per say defending the naughty scene as such. As a fellow human being IŽd certainly wish all the girls a better life than serving "us") - whether we like it or not: I am somehow quite sure that the availabilty of willing ladies by the ratio 13 to a dozzen, DOES have an impact on the number of visitors to the country! Or not.....?
Is anyone opposing me when I frankly say that Pattaya would never be what it is today if it was not for walking street and all the other "fun" places? Beware - I visited it first time in 1976 and can very well describe and see the enormous change!
Thailand had approx 14 million tourists last year. This year it is expected to rise to almost 17-18 million! The turnover last year 500 bn baht and 2008 expected 800 billion! Incredible! Well earned perhaps. Despite many glitches.
And finally I also agree to you Daffy when you mention that the reason for the different closing hours is possibly stupidity and incompetance. Too bad though that there seems to be a lot of it!

This early closing has not only effect on visitors and residents like me.
Think about the consequences of bar owners making less money and trying to make up for their loss by cutting wages for their staff.
And there is of course the 'horde' freelancers who are making less money because their favorite hangouts (ie Beer Garden and Thermae) are closed by 12.

I don't get what the 'normal' farang find in BKK, hot, humid, polluted & not cheap anymore
If it wasn't for the girls I wouldn't come within a millon miles of here

It's quite unfortunate that to you, the girls are the only attraction to BKK/LOS.
Personally, while *certainly* the girls contribute to the attraction, I still find a week spent in LOS to cost significantly less than that same week spent in Hawaii, or even San Diego, for that matter. The weather is generally more pleasant, the beaches are nice and clean (okay, not Pattaya), the cost of accommodations and living are vastly more reasonable than other destinations in the Americas, and the people and culture are, IMO, better and friendlier.
In fact, the only real downsides, if you have to look for one, is that travel time is close to 20 hours, versus 5 hours for Hawaii - and while the ticket costs roughly double than the Hawaii destination, once on the ground, all prices are astronomically cheaper. To me, it's worth it just flying out for a week and lying at my hotel, by the pool, or heading to the beach of Koh Chang for 5-6 days
...and, of course, there's the girls.
