I'm assuming you mean Buddhist. I'm not sure what either of those ideologies has to do with racism.
I prefer to put it down to rank stupidity and laziness, mostly the latter.
The Thai's I've met all seem pretty decent, but - let's call a spade a spade - their intellectual curiosity is very low. If you see a Thai read a book, it's usually one of those crappy Jap comic books.

It was originally a Greek expression and loosely translated meant call a fig a fig and denoted a person who spoke rudely. There was a Greek word for trough (hollowed out) and gradually in English that became a spade and referred to a person who spoke bluntly.
The black as the ace of spades phrase in reference to negroes was first introduced in the 1920s and as ftumch said, came from the playing card, the spade.

You said that there seems to be no logic to Thai racism, well there is. This type of bigotry or racism is certainly not unique to Thailand and is found in a number of Asian countries where confucianism has had a big influence. That doesn't mean the logic is right or just in any way, but it is intended to suit a particular purpose.
Now rather than suggesting it's rank stupidity and laziness because you don't understand a different culture to yours, why don't you spend some time studying the Ideologies, history and the movement of people into Thailand, and the influence of the different cultures they brought with them.
The fact that you live here and haven't done so I can only put down to rank stupidity and laziness, mostly the latter.

I had the same experience in Rainbow II ("Members only"). But when I went there with a Caucassian friend - no problems! I think most bars in NEP are OK - seems like its Rainbow mostly that discriminates. I don't really care for the go-go scene. So.. just as well.

Well, for the record, I'm in my mid thirties, and I always dress up when I'm going out anywhere. So that means that I was dressed as well, if not better than those whites and Japanese that were in Rainbow 4.
Yes, I could have easily shown them my American Pastport, or even said, " Mai Chai African, Bpen Kon American! ", But it's the whole principle of the matter.....

So are you saying that the reason that some Go - Go's won't let Africans in is because they smell? I have to dissagree with that theory. I've been in bars where hot sweaty white guys would come in and also smell up the place to high heaven..........Yet no one complained ( at least, not openly)..... I wonder why?

Regrettably there are cases where the smell is the issue. This applies to any culture. It is not an ethnic/race thing but a hygiene thing.
Many cultures do not take daily baths, use deodorants, wear cologne, etc.
For example there is a distinct difference with the hygiene of the Indians I work with in Chennai and those I work with in the UK and the US. In Chennai all the water used in a household needs to be trucked in and so daily baths are a luxury. These habits are hard to break and will follow a person when he travels.
I remember an incident I had when I was flying between HK and GuangZhou during the SARS crisis. At the doorway the flight attendant offered me a facemask. In my best Chinese I told her that I did not believe that SARS would be a problem so I would not need a facemask. She insisted, so I took one.
About 50% of the passengers on the flight (including my two seatmates) were contract workers from Mozambique. Whilst these were wonderful chaps and we had a great chat their body odor was overwhelming. Needless to say I along with the other passengers wore masks.
When the flight attendant passed by to distribute water she leaned over to me and whispered 'I told you so'.
Summary: Do not get too worked up over these comments. Do understand that you are not in the USA, people have different habits from those at home, and not all actions of the locals are intended to insult you but may be a result of practical experience. It isn’t always racism....

I agree with China sailor.
I travel a lot and lived in africa during 13 years.
I must admit that african type people could have problems in Thailand and I agree with china sailor's statement, no luck if you are african-american.
Now another point which could explain quite a things, I know 3 african-african guys who go regularly to thailand to make their little "traffic" (diamonds in this case) and they tend to behave like russian maffia dudes.......
I can understand the thais who happened to meet these guys (understanding they are the first african-type people they met) who think that african people are dodgy people.
Sure they are wrong and it is a kind of racism but I can enter places where farangs ar not tolerated, it is racism too nope?
Anyway, if you smile and are polite things generally are far more easy.
