Well it seems like the police are up to their old bag of tricks again.
While everybody is arguing about the smoking ban nobody seems to notice that you will not have bars to drink at either after 12:00 AM.
How soon until the next coup?
On both Fri. and Sat. they raided places in droves. SC was shutdown at 1:00 AM both nights. Q-Bar was raided with two bus loads of police accompanied with TV crews filming. What news is this? Seeing people drinking, dancing and having a good time> Meanwhile down South the bombs are geeting bigger and better, but the importance of stopping people from drinking past 12:00 AM seems to be a priority with the moral majority politicians.
On Sat. night, GLOW, Twisted, Bed and Q-Bar were closed at 12:00 AM. Good Times! If I did not live here I would not come here for a vacation, PI and Cambodia looking a lot better.

This sucks. Looks to me like TRT, *cough*, PPP are up their old agendas, and busy distracting folks with media-rich police actions of questionable point, from the real problems plaguing the country, mostly directed by moral majority and self-righteous politicians.
It's amazing how much the US has in common with Thailand, in that respect.
I guess there's a good reason why the Bush family has such close ties with Thailand (an allusion to Bush's brother doing 'business' with Thai companies)
Still, good enough for a vacation, I'm sure, though certainly makes it far less of a desirable destination to live there. Call me crazy, I actually like living in the USA, while I like vacationing in Thailand.

Went to Molly Malones on Soi Convent last night to watch the rugby. At 12.30 2 plain clothes coppers came in and we all had to drink up and leave. They didn't seem bothered about everyone smoking though. Really pissed my mate off as it was halfway through the Welsh game.

Not to de-rate any country in particular, but it strikes me such populist hoodwinking is a disease in all democracies where elections are just round the corner -- whether the corner ahead or behind. TU has a pertinent query in this context -- how soon until the next coup? What's next ? Mid-afternoon raids on massage parlours and touristy hotels ? More visa fee hikes ?

I was actually witnessing the 2 nights in a row raids on the places mentioned at soi 11. One shakes the head in disbelief. This is a country with a staggering percentage of its revenues coming from tourism. I believe last I checked it was over 30%! An amazing figure and of course they live rather dangerously as well with such a concentration on a certain source of income. Should (god forbid) somthing violent happen (and my very honorable long time friend predicts it will) and tourists flees the scene - it will only affect and hurt the little people. Everyone making their money serving us in all sorts of ways.
A nation that needs the visitors sees it necessary to run these raids with busloads of uniforms and close down the places of entertainment at midnight. Not that it really affects me who live a more everyday life here - but for those just spending a couple of weeks of their hardearned holiday? A barowner told me: "new government, new police, this will be for a while and then back to normal". Maybe so, but with this everyday changing attitude based on what some boys behind the scene decides is appropriate for the day is sad.
My friends predicaments of what will happen in the near future I pray is wrong - but he is from high grounds, old enough and educated to know what he is talking about and it is scary indeed. There is a tension lurking below the surface and it might come to a showdown. Mr T is about to redeem payback for services rendered. Or did anyone think he was just going to spend his time looking at football?! I am indeed worried.

scratch dog turned up the lights at 3.40 am.
went to twisted earlier. nakadia at the desks for a full 20 minutes!! but there were only about 40 people inside when the police shut them down at MIDNIGHT.
toxic picked up and was going strong til 2:30am.
spicy got locked down before 4am. nobody allowed to leave for an hour or so.
sawasdee house at kaosan was a save haven til 5:30am.
star wars street parade was going strong at 7am still. drinking in the open in full daylight with ladyboys showing their titties etc.
what are they thinking (not the ladyboys, but the police) ??

Dunno about the tourist thing. Last week I had to go up to BKK on business twice. Most of my usual hotels were either fully booked or charging 'rack rates'. I assume that it might have been be related to the Singapore and Malaysian School holidays.
But then I noticed more families and fewer punters along the lower Soi's of Sukhumvit.
When I was at the Grand President last Thursday I was tripping over fat-assed mums and their kids gawking at the vendor's wares as I walked to Nana.
M2N was full but most of the punters were more interested in watching a local farang snooker instructor 'teach school' to all the establishment's pool sharks. One of the male staff lost 5000bT to the dude. The girls were trying hard but most of the marks seemed not to be interested.
Finally, walking back to the GP at 0130 the street was lined with FLs but there were few interested punters and fewer takers.
Lets face it, the government's program to replace punters with cash-flush tourists seems to be paying off...

From what I read in the BKK Post the guy flew in from Moscow for a one day business meeting. Hardly a long term resident hiding out from the police, the Russian government is protecting him don't ya know.
However this item certainly will drive the 'good' tourists from the beaches to BKK:
