Am planning a trip to BKK in the next week. I understand there is a state of emergency in place. Are the usual districts still in "normal" operating modes? Looking for any info on Nana, Cowboy, and the bars around the lower Suk area. Appreciate any input.

I would advise staying away from BKK and if you come to Thailand I would consider Phuket or Pattaya. However keep in mind that a general protest could spread to the provences and that the government may decide to close the airport and lock down transportation if this happens (at least this is what other countries in this situation have done). Have you considered Manila instead ...

There are soldiers and police a bit everywhere (including sukhumvit area), skytrain and MRT are not functioning normaly, most shopping places are closed, there are also problems with some BAD traffic jams (due to closure of skytrain and taxi being forced to take huge detours to go around the protest sites.... So yes, go to Pattaya and stay there until it is more quiet Madfrog

BTS is shut down indefnitely, MRT shut at 5pm.... to me this is the main problem. now, the traffic is worse with roads surrounding the protest site shut down. this week I had no problem going fro siam sq area to sukhumvit, but now with Phaya thai and rama IV shut (and BTS) i'm not so sure..... if you stay in the suk area, I think you wont notice much otherr than some soldiers around. trying to go out of that sector if public trans is shut down will be a trip back to the pre-BTS BKK traffic.

The view that this can't carry on for very much longer appears plausible, then, one of two things will happen: - The Reds will be dispersed forcibly with considerable bloodshed + a date for new elections +possible martial law; - Thailand will dissolve into complete anarchy. The second possibility appears remote to me, as anarchy is not a Thai characteristic. Had Thailand been a Muslim country, then, anarchy would have been a very real possibility. _____________________________________________ where is all that dribble coming from?? to the OP if you stay on sukhumvit from nana upwards, you should be safe as any other given day. its heaven for punters now in bkk. rtb

Wireless is only a short walk from Soi 4, Central world a bit longer, If shit really hits the fan the trouble is less than 5 minutes away for a mob to be at Soi 4 and Suk, Will it happen, I pray not, but just know that this is not very far and there really is NO way the police/military could stop them if it was a good size crowd. keep your head down and stay off the BBC ! ... no... no, definately not business as usual... but when is ANYTHING in Thailand usual? ... I am resident here for 10 years... raised in Asia, so perhaps a bit more thoughtful than the newbies still on a grand adventure here in Asia's deep waters. ... (as the guy who thought the would engage in a bit of thoughtful political give and take with a taxi driver a couple of weeks ago... he ended up being chased in the street by the guy weilding a knife at him... guys, don't do that... really... just... don't). ... my best source are UN security guys privy to government briefings and monitoring news sources while observing first-hand as close as they dare (interesting how much they are divining off of Twitter)... others in my circle of resources include long-time farang and a number of Thais, who for the most part seem less aware than the fully-engaged farang who have been around. ... (yeah, yeah, I know... sweet people, but not strong on critical thinking skills... another thread altogether). ... as reported, the 'red zones' are indeed war zones... but, they are tightly contained, and the battery limits appear secured... the Red's top leaders have been seen little of since Sedaeng took one to the head on international TV (the security analysts, incidentally believe the government did NOT shoot Sedaeng). ... the analysts report the government is unlikely to overrun the red zones, but will successfully sweat the contained areas over time... should the government overrun the red zone, the casualties would be heavy, they would appear unnecessarily overbearing, and could precipitate uncontrolled running street battles in adjoining areas, none of which they want... they will bide their time. ... after these immediate engagements are concluded, the longer-range fear is that small militant units will continue hitting urban targets elsewhere; perhaps in the provinces, or critical infrastructure... no sense in going after the airports, as the street battles seem to have sufficiently made the desired international impact... they are desperate to see the government resign, or another military coup. ... gun battles are confirmed on Friday and Saturday nights at Pratunam, Bon Kai, Rajpraprop, Din Daeng, Rajprasong, Silom, Lumpini Park, Wireless Road, Thai-Belgium Bridge. ... the government this morning signaled they MIGHT call a city-wide curfew today (Saturday, 16 May) at 18.00... monitor the local media... Thailand being what it is, I am uncertain just how strictly it would be enforced... for example, the 100-metre walk up Soi 23 from Citidines to Soi Cowboy might be forgiven... many of the gurls working there live above the bars, so perhaps opportunities for recreation would remain. ... as you've read elsewhere, and as at this writing, both the BTS and MRT are closed indefinately... Emporium Shopping Mall closed abruptly early Friday evening and again Saturday afternoon... other street shops and restaurants in the Phrom Pong area remain open. ... the area which I travel in recent days is the On Nut side of Siam Square, along Phloen Chit and Sukhumvit Roads: --- I would say the threshhold is Phloen Chit BTS Station... Phloen Chit, Chit Lom, Siam Square are no-go zones, as well as the other side of Siam Center (toward Thaksin and Mo Chit) for some distance, for which I have no first-hand knowledge. --- Nana area is marginal, within earshot of RPGs and gunshots on Wireless Road and in Lumpini Park. --- Asoke Junction appears unaffected, other than the presence of lightly armed Army and police at the street level... Starbucks at Times Square Building (next to Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit) enjoyed brisk business Friday and yesterday... felt comfortable there... pedestrian traffic on the street outside appeared normal throughout Friday, slower than normal on Saturday. --- Phrom Pong BTS and further out appeared unaffected. ... a friend staying at the very end of Soi 4 (Nana) on Friday and Saturday nights reported sounds of the engagement... staying within walking distance only of the hotel, he reported Soi Nana businesess on the Nana Entertainment Plaza side of Sukhumvit were trading very poorly... he chose not to venture down to Nana Entertainment Plaza. ... a buddy living at Las Colinas, immediately adjoining Soi Cowboy, reports the pedestrian traffic up and down Soi Cowboy is as thin as he has seen... ever... the taxi queue on Asoke in front of Soi Cowboy was but 2-3 deep, where there are normally a dozen taxis, or more. ... today, at Starbucks Emporium, the customer load is but maybe 33% of the normal Sunday afternoon traffic... most everyone is staying home, traveling only for essential needs (cawww-ffeeeeee!). ... ADVICE FOR THE TOURIST: --- Pattaya would be safer, if you question your street instincts in unstable foreign environs... accept that Thais don't think as us, and none of what any of us THINK they might likely do is certain, including experienced security analysts. --- Notwithstanding a city-wide curfew (see above), I would do BKK for several days, confining my activities to Soi Cowboy... maybe not for a week... I'd stay in a smaller property from mid-Sukhumvit and further out... say, from Asoke Junction onward. --- Suggest staying within walking distance of Soi Cowboy, where recreational activities appear continuing, since street traffic is as bad as I've seen in 10-years and public transportation is suspended indefinately. --- I'd bag Nana and definately bag Patpong (if it is not already vacated)... still, lots of hides remain at Soi Cowboy. --- Going elsewhere in Thailand, I think no problems connecting at Suvarnabhumi... as well, catching ground transportation from Suvarnabhumi to Pattaya would be no problem... maybe expect delays from roadside inspections on the return trip to the airport. ... there it is guys... that's what I got... weep, or rejoice... whatever your inclination... to adventure forth into the deep water, where you can neither see nor touch bottom if you get into trouble... or, bag it all for more protected waters.
