I noticed the alcohol content was way higher in Thai beers then the beers here in the states. So when you guys go out drinking do you try to maintain a constant buzz or do you actually cross the line into a drunken stupor? On my first trip to Thailand I noticed ugly Thai girls (sure to each their own but these girls were horrible) dragging out drunks that could barely walk. I vowed not to be a sucker so stuck with drinking coke (for some reason a lot of girls thought it was strange to drink a non-alcaholic beverage in the go-go's). Since I'll be spending more time at beer bars I want to try to avoid any "coyote-ugly" type of experiences. Any drinking tips, stories, advice etc. would be much appreciated, thanks

Well, I usually stick to Kloster, Carlsberg or Heineken - which are all light lagers - but I still find that beer goes to my head a lot faster in LOS than back in Europe, and my capacity is a lot lower. No idea why - probably the climate and/or a less fatty diet.

One move I find useful is to switch to gin & tonics after about 3 beers. For some reason, G&Ts just don't have the same accelerated-alcohol effect on me. Another is to take a break altogether after a couple of beers & switch to coke or OJ before resuming - but it DOES feel a bit plonkish chastely sipping OJ in a GG bar.

One guy I know always orders a short (usually whisky & coke) AND a glass of water. This dilutes the alcohol intake, and of course makes each 'round' last a lot longer. I think you just have to experiment to see what works for you, because crossing that line is all too easy if you don't watch yourself. Ý

I remember reading somewhere that the addition of any carbonation to alcohol intake helps bringing the state of drunkeness faster than having the same amount of alcohol but without the addition of carbonated drinks.

In other words, 10 whiskeys and soda will get you more drunk than 10 whiskeys and water.

By alcohol content, that it is why beer is so powerful when it comes to getting you drunk. As opposed to wine.

Now, I have no clue is the above is true or just bs. But I remember reading it.

Alchohol content of many beers in Asia is around 5%, which is twice the average strength of normal UK beers. ÝOne story I heard for this in Hong Kong was that when beer was shipped out from Europe in the past it was brewed extra strong so that it arrived here with some alcohol left in it! But you're right - if you aren't used to it, this stronger beer can catch up with you very quickly especially when it's hot and humid.

I try the adage of two Singha beers then a half litre of water.

This works two fold.

1  Stops you drinking beer too fast as you are having a break.

2 The water helps to dehydrate you hence no hangover in the morning

Yeah, I think dehydration must be the key to this.

I've certainly found I've been getting drunker, sooner in recent weeks, & I expect that's due to the combination of heat & humidity at this time of year.

So plenty of water with your drinks is probably the answer. Maybe salt, too, as JR says - I've found that frequent leg cramps have also been a problem of late.

Great post Lofty.

Might you by trying to say "hydrate"?
I find the loss of bodily fluids through continuous ejaculation, sweating, and leaching from alcohol to surely result in stuporous behavior. Like Mr. knokna tag line says, "you smoke to much, drink too much, and f_ck too much!". On my last visit, a BG called my granpapa. I'm 47. Thanks. Another said, "maybe next time you come back not so much beer, your belly not big anymore." More thanks.

Anyway, what I've found that works well for me is a Large bottle water from Nana Disco to Thermae, then one more from Thermae to Grace, and on and one. Brief stops at food carts help as well.

The beer shipped from England to the east on ships was called India Pale Ale (and still is).  The extra alcohol and hops makes the beer keep better.  The lower alcohol content beers spoil.  Alcohol does not disapate.

I'm not sure which beers you drink in the UK but Samuel Smith's brewery has beers ranging from 3.8 to 7.4 percent by volume.
