KMR; Dont sound like he was the dumb one (no offence) Not quite the same but I usealy take the "limmo" taxi from the airport 500bht. Supposed to be everything included as I double / tripple ask the dude writing the card he says "yes just like last time" Well last time they stuck me with a real shithead. Wanted toll money "NO" wanted tip "NO". Dude got pissed at the hotel. Lucky my reg was with me all I can say. I guess it depends sometimes on who the driver is???

The simple and safe way is to avoid the lurking taxi's and flag down a passing taxi which has the sign "taxi meter" displayed.

X learn that skytrain hell everybody learn it, if the route you are going is on it's route, it's the only way to travel. And yes X you can use that like it's written "sawadee na meter krup" for men and "ka" (on the end for women)

Sometimes the expressway route is much, much faster. Sometimes it isn't and it's just a waste of money. Unless you're an expert on bkk traffic, you can't automatically assume the driver is trying to rip you off.

Yeah, most taxi drivers are legit, some will try to rip you off. 1)Make sure they hit the meter and it reads 35bht when you begin your journey. 2)If he doesnt hit the meter and tells you 300bht, just get out and catch another one (just like the girls, you dont have to worry about finding another taxi in BKK), 3)if they offer the expressway, at the tolls, pay the toll yourself, instead of him paying and charging you later (my ripoff guy even tried to charge me for his return trip through the expressway), and 4)at the end of the trip, always show the money 1st and let him give you the change before you hand him your money. If he claims he doesnt have change, then tell him too bad (he'll come up with it real quick). Sounds harsh but it isnt, if they are honest joe, I tip the guys more than they would get if they had ripped me off, its just a matter of principle.

The "I don't have any change" is the oldest con in the book. One old taxi driver pulled that on me on Sukhumvit, so I said, O.K., I will give you exact change, and counted out my coins, Baht by Baht. Needless to say, this burned his ass. He knew better, he just wanted a big tip and ended up with nothing. Funny thing was, I woulda tossed him a few Baht (rounding up) if he'd played straight.
Second time this happened, I said no, I want change, and the guy was legit. So he hopped out of the cab, got change at a nearby 7-11, and gave it to me. So he earned his tip. I always reward honor with honor.

Seems like many of the cabbie' try this " no change " trick on Thai's as well as visitors. My TG was always furious when it happened.

I don't think it's unreasonable for the driver to not be able to change a 1000B note, but they should all be able to handle a 500, IMO, or they shouldn't be allowed on the road. The taxi board should do spot checks to enforce this.
