There are huge qualitative differences between an evil sawng where inmates are brutalized "slaves" who are allowed to burn to death rather than have the owner see them run away, and a hotel sized massage parlor where the girls are not so mistreated (or not obviously so.)
HOWEVER
If you want to define "brothel" as any place where you pay sex on premises, then every MP is a brothel and so are a lot of barber shops, and quite a few bars with fantasy rooms, etc. I fail to see what possible significance the tired fictions of massage and so on have to do with anything, and the distinction between paying up front and just paying a token fee for the room, then paying the girl, is a trivial one.
SURELY the significant distinctions have to do with how the girls are recruited and treated, and whether they stay in the trade voluntarily, or only because they are in debt to the mamasan or business for monies paid to ther parents or some broker -- or all too often, in the case of the sawngs, they have been abducted, lied to, raped, beaten, threatened, intimidated, etc. and are kept working by same terror tactics.
In the loosest sense every bar that has girls to be fined out is a 'brothel' but that is not the way that the term is ever used in Thailand.
You can go to Washington Square and the better bars (which have no gogo) all have guest houses associated with them, the girls are more than willing and the rooms are for rent. But, I wouldn't call Bourbon Street or the Texas Lone Star "brothels" if I were you. Fat George could just sit on you and squash you like a beetle, and Doug, well, Doug would do whatever he felt like, but it probably would not be good for you.

If you can't follow the logic of the post, read it slowly. I didn't say that you called those places brothels; I said more or less than starting to define brothels in Bangkok can be a very slippery slope indeed and that trying to do so lightly and without a lot of forethought will not make you popular.
What do you reckon disqualifies a Wash.Sq. bar with girls and rooms from being a brothel?
By the time you pay the BF and the room rent you will have shelled out a tidy sum "up front" and what sort of accountancy is going to seperate that from the tip for the girl? Hmmm? Which money went to pay for sex? Are you back to dealing in legal hair splitting? As in the MPs? The barber shops? The bars with fantasy rooms?
No.
You simply haven't thought this through.

A Thai brothel is a terrible place that fortunately, no farang is ever going to be tempted to visit, because we are not allowed in. BTW the guards and fences and barbed wire are there not to keep us out but to keep the girls in.

I don't know why there seems to be so much confusion over what a brothel is??
It is a house of prositution.. i.e. a place where you can consort with prostitutes ..
The Swangs are brothels, the MP's are brothels, Eden Club is a brothel .. the "ladyhouses" that I have been to and the ones my friends tell me about are brothels, but not the indentured type.. you can have the girl there or ust like KFC "take away", K11 has brothels, some of the bars that have on site short time rooms are at least "part time brothels" .. and so it goes ..
I don't have a problem with calling prostitutes "sex workers or sex prefessionals", but then a brothel would be a "house of sex professionals" ..
