My view is if you want to dress like a pikey backpacker then stay over Kao Sarn Rd area, otherwise try to dress as you normally would when going out in a big international city. The heat and humidity is the big problem, but my experience is that sandals are definately no go in CM2 & Spasso (although the door girl gave me a pair of socks to wear with sandals the one time I did turn up in a pair) and no self respecting city gent should be seen out in a pair of shorts after dark.
