I always make sure I have 20 and 100 bath notes in my pocket and make sure you sit with confident and tell him meter as soon you get in. This way he will think of less to screw up. On my last trip hexibot and i almost got screwed up but we took the situation under control and told him to get lost. He tried to take us to cupid when our eyes were set for darlings massage

Remember that keeping lots and lots of small change around is not a bad idea. Everytime I travel overseas I make sure I have a pocket/bag full of small bills and coins. The change issue never comes up because I always give them exact change and if they behave a small tip.

I had to check out the after bar hours scene at Grace Sun.(? night's are beginning to blur) night and jumped into cab with a surly attitude driver,. Surprised by his animosity in LOS, he was seething with bad attitude for the "AIDS carriers" girls.
Anyway, he was pretty sly too, never cleared the meter. I was waiting to jump in as his last fare of three maidens exited when we got out of the lot and onto the street there was 57 baht on the meter all ready.
In my experience all the taxi meters have started at a 35 baht baseline in Bkk. So, I called him on it by pointing out he must have "overlooked it" and he reset it. Tricky though.

I have a good one for "No change"-trick.
I tell the driver that no problem, I go inside to get small money.That usually makes them remember that in the other pocket they have the small money.
If he has tried to fool me "visit a good bar/ massage /whatever i do not tip them.
Other trick is "meter is broke, 100 baht,OK?"
Just say no OK and ask to stop the car,then simply change cab AND pay nothing even if asked.
Sometimes drivers say "Hey, 35 baht basic pay !", which I completely ignore by closing the door.

I think that it's in the taxi cab handbook on how to possibly cheap and jack up the fares.
Never had a problem in BKK, but have had taxi drivers try to jack me in NY as well as in CA.

i agree with sandiego, i keep a stack of 20's in my safe i always grab a grip of them and put in front pocket for taxi and tipping....

This taxi thread seems to have lots of interest. OK, I also always make sure I have lots of small bills and insist on the meter being turned on whenevery I use a taxi. However, I have had taxi driver after taxi driver tell me they don't use the meter after 10PM. One guy got absolutely indignant about it and put me out of the taxi. Anyone else had this experience or know if it is a general rule?

No, that's not a rule. He attempted to screw you up. Taxi meters are available 24-h a day. Only when you hire the taxi at the airport you have to add B/.50 to the fare shown in the meter....ah! in all cases the passenger pays the toll way fees....
If a taxi driver comes up with:
"....sorry, taxi meter broken, XXXX Baht ok?...."
"....after XX hrs no meter...."
....just close the door and take the next cab. There is no need to argue. Few other cabs will pass by within the next 5 minutes.

Here's new one.
When I left Pattaya ,I took a taxi to airport.
I had ordered the car from travel agency,did not take it from a street.
I confirmed that the payment INCLUDED the highway toll.
When taxi arrived I gave the voucher to him and immediately he said "Oh , no highway,You must pay me more,if want highway."
I said politely that the payment included the payment and there we went.
After 25 minutes of driving his mobile rang and after short conversation he told me that his friend driving ahead had called him and warned that highway was "blocked,too much cars.
Sure I believe that:Highway blocked at saturday evening, 20.30 pm, everybody driving to Bangkok.
Him told me that we must take the old road and I knew THAT WAS SLOW !
4 hours time to catch the plane and old road was not fast enough to be sure.
OK, I said, what else could be done ?
So,he said motorway"If You pay more..."
So I just smiled and handed 120 to him and we got easily in airport.
But that tricking cost him his tip,"happy trails" and wave of the hand was all he got when clearly expecting something more.
