>>waxinghead wrote:-Majority of Thai people liked Purachai and supported his "moral crusade"- this is based on the ABAC poll shortly after Purchai's initial actions: - enforcing age ID checks - random drugs testing - enforcing closing hours I will have to spend some time to check exactly, but I can recall around 80% of respondents in the ABAC poll of around 1000 people (all Thai) approved of Purachais work overall as (if I recall correctly at the time) Interior Minister at that time based on these action. You can call ABAC Research if you want to find out more. So no, not based on my own ideas but rather based on a statistically significant sample of people from Bangkok. How do you think he was going to win the governor race (which he would have most certainly done) if people from Bangkok didn't like him?! Purachai is actually sort of my next door neighbor in Lard Prao, so I have spoken to him a few times; he really believes in what he is doing, which is to be admired, even if you believe that what he is doing is the wrong thing. He is, however, so stubborn and not a good communicator; hence the common belief that he would have been terrible as governor since that job takes a ton of teamwork and influencing ppl, since the role itself really only involves collecting money from street vendors and rubbish collection as the joke goes. Regarding whether Thai people will tell a foreigner the truth...well since I am part Thai I guess I can hear the truth in part?! I do agree however; if asked many of the people who worked at night; stalls, bar owners etc were extremely scathing of Purachai because their livelihoods were being taken away from them. But of course, they make up a small percentage of the population, and therefore their opinions did not show up strongly in a poll of the overall population. BTW there are plenty of tourists coming here for reasons other than the sex industry; they go to Malaysia and Singapore for many of the same reasons that they come here. Something different; nice weather; sea; beaches; cheap stuff to buy and so on. They come now for those reasons without ever putting a foot in a gogo bar. Boring, dull, that's the nature of my posts Pleased to help.

I'm tellin' ya - we need multiple ignores -- give me three fields of 'ignore', and we'd be talking bliss. Then again, just get the other guys to put you on ignore, it's equally blissful. Works for me, so far, two out of four. I just feel it'd be more beneficial if the 'You have been ignored' insert were to be replaced by an actual advertising banner. Dr. von Quack!

waxhead, Interesting. I am only anti-early closing because I have had enough of it in the UK (No sex please we're British). A while back I was talking to an ex-board member, an alleged American journalist who made some very accurate comments about what we have been talking about. He said that Purachai is too weird even for Chairman Thaksin which could mean he is honest which will not take you very far in any country's politics ! He also predicted the troubles in the south of the country with great accuracy. Lat Phrao ! Is that ex-coffee shop Thai Airways Curtiss C-46 Commando near the post office still there?

I am quite happy with earlier closing, the bit that annoys me is the way they handle it - just be consistent and tell people what they have to do, then enforce it. Not hard, but governments all over the place seem to do a great job of screwing this up!!! Yep, Purachai definitely was too weird for lots of things; really nice guy but like I say impossible for anyone to work with. And very honest too - trying to fit in with some of the other people like Snoh....well you can imagine!! Sadly, I do not hang around Lard Prao at night except to eat and sleep, so am not that much up for the nitelife side; just for the food really and there are lots of nice restuarants at reasonable price. There are quite a few places around Thai airways, but that is just far enough to have to drive, after which I always end up driving a bit further to the places I know and like - creature of habit and all that. I've never seen this plane or the cafe, slthough there are some old planes on the way to Pattaya; I don't know anything really about aircraft sadly. Or cafes located in one!!! Actually, to make matters worse, I don't even know where the post office is in Lard Prao! Man, I really need to get out more. Now in the UK if I understand correctly, the clubs can open until the morning right?

waxhead, They have just changed the law on licensing. No longer any restrictions ! But for most pubs little will change as the landlords can't be bothered to take on extra staff and pay the extra wages ! As for the clubs, yes they go on all night. I played in one called Fabric at 4:30am in the morning. A Monday morning. There were quite a few Thais who went there after the restaurant closed where they were working. Did another very early one at the Cafe de Paris. I'd like to know where the good restaurants are on Lard Phrao?

Well, having some Chinese blood, I go for quality, not ambience Given the choice of eating decent food on the side of the road or going to the best steak house in the world for me would probably be a toss of a coin for instance. There is a great seafood restuarant CHinese style between LArd prao soi about 16 and soi 20; it is not that far from the turn off to Ratchada, but before you get to Carrefour on the opposite side; that place is great. Cheap and great food; has a big lobster stuck on the side of the building; they cook on the roadside, you cannot miss it. The owner is nearly 80 and still works every night for the most part. There is a nice couple of local places on the corner of lardprao and wipawadee. Not far to get to the beer barns in Ram Intra, which aren't great food, but good volume. Chao Phraya hotel has a great jook buffet. Somboon Seafood is just around the corner which is also quite good, although I like the place in Lard Prao more. Lots really, I pretty much eat Thai food and somewhere like Lard Prao is the place for that Fabric aye?> I have heard VERY good things about Fabric; when I was over in UK on a business trip when I used to work in the liquor industry (sort of) we did a tour of some places, but it was all in one night; I do remember that K&D were playing that night, at Trade or Fabric; but for me I am a D&B guy, so movement is the one I'd really have liked to go to. I think the English club scene is sensational; USA clubs for the most part really really really are a long way behind, although again there are probably brilliant places, but just you have to know where they are.
