I am so tired of the entire run down room and facilities at the Manhattan I wanted a change. I decided to give the Ruamchit a try. I was there I 2001 and it was okay, but I liked it even better. The Manhattan has an awesome buffet, but I am not a big breakfast eater anymore. Besides, Soi 9 has a great Chinese donut and Joak vendor. She has been there for eons. Room was spacious and clean with a great view of the city, staff was very friendly. The CTV was not great and bathroom were small. Once again, someone did not properly caulk the bathroom fixtures. This is to be expected. The biggest advantage is that you are on top of the Thermae. As a guest, you can sit in the lobby and nab your girls. This is good because you have better light. Price was 900baht per night.

Watch for joiner fees - they charged me 300b one night out of three in 2002, and rumour has it they are still doing it.

Be aware that there is also a Ruamchitt in the back of Soi 10. Even a little cheaper... THB 600 or so per day.

To each his own, but I found Ruamchitt to be a little too worn down for me. Or I should say just to save 100 baht. Big rooms, but worn down. OK if you're just staying one night before going elsewhere and you want to save money. Ideal for that purpose, but for several days I think your money is better spent with the big 3 (nana, majestic and dynasty)
I did think the roof top pool looked nice, but I got there at night and didn't use it.

I stayed there in november, never had to pay any joinerfees. My bathroom had a bathtub in it, so it couldn't be that small. Maybe they have different (bath) rooms? The room itself was ok, although I don't like the carpet that much, especialy when it's been there for who knows how long.

The Tai Pan is a f***ing dump, this post is about the Ruamchitt. If you want info about another hotel I suggest you do a search for it, there are a few topics about the hotel you want. It is an overpriced time share....

A current up-date on the Ruamchitt...
The price for a double is still 900 Baht, that is the walk-in rate, on the registration form it states that any un-registered guests will be charged a 250Baht joiner fee. I have NEVER been questioned about any of the girls I take "home" with me. If you are friendly, flirt with the front desk girls and are generaly a nice person you will have nothing to worry about. If you are a c*** with a PPA (piss poor attitude) then expect to pay the joiner fee.
The rooms are still reasonably clean, the bathroom had a bit of mildew growing between the tiles but nothing serious. The TV still sucks, you get 2 movie channels, CNN and about 5 or 6 Thai channels.
There is construction on the west side of the hotel that starts about 6 am, if you are a light sleeper, request a room on the east side.
The roof-top pool is still awesome, the water is crystal clear, you get all day sun and it is very clean around the pool.
If you use the phone for your lap-top you will be charged 8 Baht for each 10 mins. a little too much but it beats using an internet cafe.
Best of all, there are 2 bars in the hotel and a lot of cute BG's.

I have taken at least 50 girls into my rooms there in the past five years and was never charged. Then again, I am always nice the front desk, bring Chiardelli chocolate, tip the bellboy 100b when I check in.
Let us not foget what is in the basement of this hotel.

True. Having the Thermae in your hotel is certainly convenient. The upstairs pool is nice too. It all comes down to whether those amenitites can justfiy staying in a substandard room IMHO for the price range.
For a 1-2 night stay and then you're off to another country, I would say yes enjoy the pool, get desert downstairs. For longer than this no. There's too much to see and do in BKK than to revolve your stay around the Ruamchitt. If it were a posh comfy hotel that would of course change things a lot. But.....different strokes.
