Now other people may know a lot more facts about this building than I, it's a story that has run and run for years and everyone who tells you a version has great inside info....but it's all different.

Several years ago a building was completed on the Tonburi side of the river, approximately opposite the Oriental. I was a hotel tall slim building with what looks like a revolving restaurant at the top.....certainly a Starship Enterprise shaped restaurant atop.

Sofitel were going to run it, but never took possession.

Some say it was subsiding, some say the correct planning approval was never sought, some say.....blah blah blah.

It started to fall into disrepair, some windows broken, that sort of thing.

Aboput 4 months ago I noticed RITTA signs around it and there was certainly work being undertaken in the river. Piling was definately taking place. looks like it was being underpinned.

I see today that the building now proudly boasts the Hilton logo all over it.

This is not the new Millenium Hilton that opens next month by the way

I was told it was dodgy workmanship in the construction, particularly the concrete mix. Hope the rooms are cheap, but I will not be staying there on my next trip.

I have heard that they have a theme song already picked out for there opening party and is to be chimed through the elevator constantly for the first 12 months 24/7 "when the walls, come tumbling down"

I doubt you've even heard of the building prior to today...the concrete mix.....bullshit.....shame I provided so much info in my original post, I doubt you could locate the building if I put you within 100m.

troll.

Wowser

yes...they do....of course financial incentives can have anything overlooked.

That said... a very expensive building has sat unused for years and work has obviously been done to resolve the issues. Underpinning can be sorted...the idiots response about the conctrete mix should be dismissed.

ps....since when has Asia been a city Wowser?

Millenium Hilton, I see it is going to open in March. It doesn't appear to be convenient to anything, being on the other side of the river. Millenium Hilton will run a shuttle boat service (how late).

Yurune,

I know the building you are talking about but I don't know about the concrete issue. Wouldn't surprise me if the pilings were under-engineered or poorly installed. Also, because Bangkok is sinking a little every year, that might cause trouble too. I did talk with a real estate agent last year whose family has been in the biz a long time. He said to be careful about buying buildings made in the last 7 to 10 years, as there are problems that are now rearing their ugly heads because of poor concrete mix (the proportions shorted for profit taking). This has resulted in some nasty settle cracking and leaking. He pointed out a few of those buildings to me. These were mainly condos, however. I'll bet the Hilton predates this mess, and was built to better standards, as it is a commerical building (famous last words).

By way of comparison, I was in a very nice commercial building over south of Siam, 10th floor, talking to a business associate, and it was raining cats and dogs. He seemed a bit upset about something, couldn't quite figure out why. Finally, he called in the janitor, who showed up with a mop. Turns out, the wall (not the window, lol!) behind him was leaking like a fountain. He had a bunch of towels balled up behind his desk to sop up the flood. The janitor was emptying them into a 5 gallon bucket. We had a good laugh about this (though he quit a few months later, maybe tired of swimming in his office), but you'd never guess it, as the building foyer, elevators, etc., are beautiful. Form over funtion, I guess.
