Should I directly book my room with a hotel, or use one of the reservation services, that claims big discounts, that are not available at the hotels?

I always find best route is first to decide on your hotel then shop around. There isn't one site that gives best offer on all hotels. Sometimes it is best with the hotel but not always. Only rule is " shop around"

I really liked working directly with the hotel. There were many discount outfitts on the web to entice me, but in the end I established a good report with a girl from the Flipper in Pattaya and Bob from Majestic. Even if there is a bit of money to be saved, I prefer to deal with the hotel.
Did the same thing for my plane ticket, and I know I could have saved a bundle there if I had opted for "online" airline deals. Only problem is if something goes wrong or you need to change something. Very hard to do with tickets purchased online. I spent the extra $ and went through a travel agent.
A funny note Kris, Dave, BK etc...: The travel agent that did my ticket heard me say that I had taken care of my hotel situation. Under her breath, her only comment was "Well dear, just make sure your hotel isn't in the "red light" district..." :-0
In it?!?!?! I'm in the f_cking epicenter honey!

I think that Dave and Humblestudent have very valid points.
I prefert to shop around and if my travel agent can get me the best deal then I go through them. Likewise on the hotel. I usually will book online and if it is a little more to book through the hotel I will. Most of the time I have found though that the 3rd party agents can book at a much lower rate. In the end, it's what gives you piece of mind.

People go to Thailand for the scenary, temples, food, and above all the different culture.
Just what was your travel agent thinking?? That we are all sex maniacs??
People should not pre-judge and maybe you should have told her that.

Just a point. I have noticed that hotels that will book direct don't usually appear in the listings by the on-line companies, and vise versa. This isn't always the case but sometimes I have saved 40% by NOT going direct to the hotel. I accept that you risk a deposit or even full payment by booking on line but to each their own.

Cool guys, thanks for the input, Last year I went and just walked off the plane and picked one from the hotel board at the airport. I knew the area because a buddy of mine works at the US embassy, so I got pretty close for guessing. It was the Holiday Manor down by the British Embassy. It wasn't bad, but I think I will head for the Nana For a day or two, then head to Pattaya for aew, then back and to a nicer place that tha Nana
I will try to make the "Meeting" on 5/23...

I avoid the online hotel booking in Thailand because it requires a full deposit in advance. That gets me committed to dates and I don't lik that. But if you have set dates that you are sure will not change, online reservations are fine. You may also try and call the hotel direct and tell them the cheaper rates offered online and they may come down. I tried that with the Ambassador Hotel in January and they did come down a bit.

I havae a voucher coming in for the first few nights, so I will see what happens, then I will wing it from there...the hotels I like HAVE to be in the "f_cking epicenter" as it was so elegantly described by humblestudent. That comment will stick with me for the rest of my life...
