It is not even possible to check in together with my lady? How does that work if I make a reservation for both of us and provide both names? I can understand the need for this kind of guest policy but am curious how it is actually enforced.
Do they decide who is allowed to register by the girl's appearance?

Yes, it is by appearance. The Oriental doesn't allow farangs to check in with Thai women. Arguing at the front desk with only cause you and especially her to lose face. A friend who was married to a TG and even produced the marriage cerificate still had problems checking in with his wife (although he did eventually manage it). I don't know if the management is as strict today as they once were, but I believe so. The Oriental is the last bastion of respectability. The reason, I'm told, is that the hotel was/is the residence of choice in Bangkok of foreign dignitaries who don't want the slightest association with BKK P4P activities.

I suppose you can check in together with your lady, as long as you make the reservation in advance. The issue, however, is guests. That they are not too keen on.
This does, of course, invited some controversy; what if you just have a "normal" Thai female friend over, etc? Sure, the staff is probably well-trained to differentiate between a legit girl and a lady of the night, but still, this can be rather subjective.
Personally, I find this whole guest thing absurd; I understand that they are trying to uphold their Victorian background back when Joseph Conrad & Co graced the hotel with their presence, but when I am paying USD$300/night, I damn better be able to bring a guest in.
I would much rather stay at a hotel where my needs are accomodated and my guests are welcomed.

Simple solution, if you want some choice digs stay in the Oriental, if you come to sample some of Bangkok nighlife and want to bring it home, don't stay in this hotel. Plenty of nice hotels on the Sukhumvit hotspots, Marriot, Sheraton etc !!

I stayed in the Oriental last Christmas and left after three days because of the guest policy......strictly no Thai girls, including legit, although several guys clearly had European P4P girls staying with them.
I moved across the river to the Penninsula. Totally different. Had different girls every night and no problems.Great hotel and great staff.
Having stayed in many of the best hotels the Oriental is also totally overrated.

To refuse falang men accompanied by Thai ladies is the purest form of racist behaviour because it stigmatizes every such Thai lady as a prostitute - no matter whether she is or not.
I checked the website - when making a reservation they only ask for one name. So they actually have the option to refuse your guest only as recently as registering.
I thought it would be technically possible to make a reservation paying up front and providing both names and thus to present an accomplised fact when arriving.
But you may be right - this place does not deserve my money. Who else do they refuse - black people, French etc.?
By the way... Superior River Wing room is 199 US$. Sounds acceptable to me. But even the nicest room cannot be perfect without a lovely Thai lady.

Want an up-class hotel with no hassles and is not sitting on SUK, I would suggest the Conrad.
If you are discreet there is no problems bringing guests, there is a shuttle to the BTS, it is two stops from Nana, and across from the American and Vientamese Embassies.
A good address to do business from, will not cause heartaches with the bosses back home, and close to the fun.

I never imagined there'd be so much interest in the policies of the Oriental Hotel, but here's how it works. The Oriental has always had a super-strict policy against joiners, no way in the world you can cajole, bribe or sneak around it. Many, many guys have tried to register with TGs (that's possible in every other 5-star hotel in Bangkok), but the Oriental says it doesn't allow unmarried members of the opposite sex to share a room. That policy is selective and is only enforced when farangs try to register with TGs, the Oriental doesn't care if a farang registers with a farang woman to whom he isn't married. If a farang makes a reservation for Mr. and Mrs John Smith, then turns up with a TG, the hotel will ask to see a marriage certificate or equivalent issued by some authority in Thailand. Essentially, it boils down to the Oriental taking a very strong stand against the hotel being used for any sort of P4P arrangements. The management backs up that policy with strict enforcement and there's virtually no way of getting around it.
In summary- if you're interested in P4P in BKK, pick another hotel. Short of forging documents, there's no way you can fool or bluff the Oriental into allowing you to have a P4P girl in your room. And with scores of guest friendly five-stars to choose from in BKK, why even try?
