if you look for a hotel in the 500 to 700 thb area, I would suggest the golden palace, soi 1, or the miami, soi 13.

When I did a years backpacking I paid 50 baht for a cubicle on KSR, shared bathroom, no windows, a lumpy mattress with no sheet. Was a few years ago now, but I can't see it being more than about 80bt now, and there are plenty of "local" tasty food stalls which are much cheaper than the tourist places if you take a short wander off KSR.

Ah, the Golden Palace -- the first hotel I ever stayed at in Thailand. Sweet memories.
Now, for your information, the Golden Palace has three kinds of rooms - the 'Suite' that is in the same area as the pool, the balcony rooms, overlooking the pool, or looking out over the outside, and the shithole rooms - which are tiny rooms (oddly decorated, with mirrors on the ceiling but NO WINDOWS!!!
They all cost pretty much the same (if you negotiate well). I used to stay in room 'A', the 'suite' on the pool, and it was a very nice acccomdation for 550 Baht at the time. The balcony rooms are decent as well. Stay away from the shithole rooms - they are absolute crap, really, unless you are just looking for something slightly better than a ST room.
One thing I observed from all of the girls I had during that trip, is that they all asked me why I was staying at this place, when (as I interpreted it) I could be doing so much better, and should stay in n icer place.
On my next trip, I 'discovered' the Centre Point (now my fave), and subsequently took every girl from my next trip to that place -- and not only was there clear 'approval' from the girls, but also a markedly different level of performance. You might not care about that, prsit, from what I gather in your initial query, but just FYI.
