Many hotels will do the job with neither c/c or passport.

Major ones perhaps not, but worth a try.

Like Scobie I don't understand your question. That is because I have never stayed in a hotel anywhere, that wanted a creditcard in advance. I also never pay in advance (only when I'm staying 1 night they ask for payment in advance.) I also never pay a hotel with my creditcard unless it is absolutly nessecary (my reasons, not theirs). I always try to pay in cash and nobody ever refused it.
I also never reserve a hotel in LOS. Never did I find my hotel fully booked. I think you will be hard pressed to make a reservation without a creditcard. Ofcourse I never stay in hotels that charge $500 for a night so I'm unfamiliar with that part of the world.
The only thing they ever want to see is my passport.

Oz.. they may want a credit card for a security deposit, yes, but my point was that they don't authorise any transaction until you tell them too. They may do a swipe, but it will never show up on your credit card statement if you either don't use the mini-bar or decide to settle your tab with cash.

So, in theory, every hotel will suit the OP's needs. He can give them a credit card for their satisfaction; they can swipe it; but if he settles his bill with cash at the end of the stay..... no transaction authorisation and no incriminating evidence for Mrs OP to see on their mutual credit card statement.

It doesnt matter if it's Pensionne Fleapit, or the Peninsular. Same same. No problem.

scobie, they may not authorize a transcaction upon check-in, but they do lock up a certain amount on your card, which could be 3-4 times the actual amount charged (This happened to me, many years ago in Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, I was only staying for one night, which was 5,000B++, but they blocked off 25,000B, and I couldn't party the rest of the night as my card had no credit left!). This will not show up on your bill, as it will be removed later, but that initial "charge" prevents you from using your card for other purchases, if you happen to have an anaemic card like mine.

Brocher
Hotel receptionists at check in, car rental folk etc., have often asked me for my credit card before I have availed myself of their services.

They swipe the card or pass it through their machine and hand me back the slip to sign which has a blank total! Dynasty Inn always try this on with me! I either refuse to sign or I put in TB1000 in the total amount then sign. Their reason is I s'pose, is that if I cost them money e.g. wreck the car, shit in the wardrobe, throw the TV out the window etc., then they'll be able to claim the money from my card instantly.

Some places have a system that "only" acknowledges that they have swiped your card but after you sign I believe that they lock up (as per BK's post) the stated amount until they receive a cancellation or payment.

Cheerio
PS: Cash is king, no?

Incorrect again scobie.

A security deposit will be authorised on your card at the time and the funds for that amount cleared and then frozen on your card until checkout or payment in full for whatever it is you are buying.

This pre authorised deposit does appear on your electronic statement and is then removed usually around 3 days after completion of the transaction.

Granted it does not appear on your written statement, but it does if you use internet banking and lets just say your wife also uses the same internet accounts, she will be able to see it.

So I think you should apologise to everyone for being an incorrect smart ass.

"Many" hotels: my ass mister you are a pillock.
Only back alley utter flee bag joints and ST places (2/3 hours) will do without checking ID.
Your fraudulent statement must be based on you patronizing exclusively fleebags for overnight stay.
Only a pillock, a fraud like you suggests it is "worth a try to rent a room in a major hotel without producing ID". For a foreigner a passport for a TH national ID-card is required, unless most exceptionally to be known by the hotel as a most trustworthy repeat customer hence ID already recorded.
Humbag did I already say you are a fraud, a pillock mister?

I have stayed in the same hotel for the last 3 years on average 3 - 5 times a year and I am known and greeted every time. Yet I must still produce my passport for them to take a copy of my visa.

This is not an option as it is a legal requirement and the hotel can loose their licence if they are caught not complying. According to my friendly staff there is no option they are told by management that they will be sacked if they do not get a copy.

The only bonus I now get is I do not have to pay in advance or pay a deposit, but the passport is copied every time.
