First I put my stuff in a locked bank bag that only I can get into,then put that in the room safe or hotel safe.

Stayed at a place in Pattaya on Soi 6. British/Irish type place with rooms upstairs. Green decor as I recall and very good food.
But my in room safe was broken into and I go nailed for 10KTHB. When I appraoched the manager he just looked at me and said...."what do you want me to do ?" and then accused my girl of stealing the money.
Yes, the in room safes are not fool proof.

FWIW I have always thought of room safes as being safe, but now????
I have a samsonite case with 3 number lock, that should stop any wayward maids but not someone who is determined.

The unconcerned manager has moved on to his own place down the same Soi... another Brit/Irish type place.
Damn I wanted to slug him that day, but fortunately I stayed on control of myself.
No I did not go to the tourist police as I did not want to take a chance that my girl (who is now my wife) would be accused by authorities. I had to eat this one.
Funny thing is the thief took only half of the money I had which was $100 bills. Maybe they thought I would not notice.
I think safes are probably ok most of the time. Just do not think they are 100% secure. And have a color photocopy of your passport if you are a tourist. We who live here can get new ones at the Embassy as time is of no consequence to us.

I was dumb enough to forget my passport in an in-room safe in Jakarta - the next night the place was booked up for a wedding, and they wouldn't get into the safe until the next guests checked out the day after the wedding. Thankfully I was just changing hotels, not leaving the country.
Last year I was staying in the Majestic Suites, and the last guest had shut the safe before he left. They sent a fellow up to open it for me, and it took him quite a while to get into it and re-set it - nothing simple like just punching in a code; he actually had to take the mechanism itself apart.

Well known practice - like you say, maybe you won't notice what's missing until after you're gone. Or just think that you spent it somewhere. It's that EMPTY wallet that attracts attention.
