What some people would to do to attract the attention of an bar girl. ( big padlocks = big money inside ) I just put my 2 bags in the cabinet and connect the shoulder straps with a small lock ( same as you use to check the bag into the airport ) together. In this way it is locked but you don’t see it easily. But the best way to stay away from the cheap unknown girls.

On behalf of Hal2001 and Hermanolobo; NO! it is cosmic conditioning - if you think they are out to abduct you, they will do it sooner or later, only they erase you memory. Possibly you already were abducted.......

I have to add this story because it's so damn funny. Last month i'm in Abu Dhabi staying at the Dana, not a five star by any stretch of the imagination. If you've ever been to the 49er Club on the top floor you'd prefer it to. I always lock my travel bag with laptop inside to the drain pipe in the bathroom sink using a bike chain and lock. When I went back to my room early afternoon there were knife marks on the bag. Someone had cut the side pockets open, the laptop was ok but my bag was butchered. Upon closer look I see small drops of blood leading out the door, up the hall and into the janitors closet. I go down and talk to the Asst. Mgr., a Filipino guy. He wont even listen, just says "Hotel NOT Responsible for Missing Valuable". Okay I ask for the Manager, "Not here, very busy person". So I sit in the coffee shop and give the waitress 10 Dir to tell me when the Manager walks in. About an hour later she points to this big tall Egyptian woman. I chase her down and explain my story. She goes up to the room and I show her the bag and the little drops of blood leading up the hall to the Janitors closet. She follows the small blood drops to the closet, pulls out her key chain and thorws open the door. This little buck-toothed filipina girl is inside folding towels. I point to the bandage on her finger, then the manager looks in the sink where a maids uniform is soaking and has small blood stains. She hauls back and slaps the snot out of this poor girl. She apologizes to me and say's she will pay for my bag and comp me for my room. Sweet! I explained to her that I tried to tell my story to the Asst. Mgr. but he would not listen. Then she tells me this is his niece. Right about that time the Asst. Mgr. walks off the elevator. The Manager grabs him by the back of the kneck and takes him into the elevator with the buck-toothed filipina maid. A little hydrogen peroxide will remove blood stains, guess the maid never learned that.

It's going to look mighty odd if a maid comes walking out of the hotel with a pelican suitcase dragging an armchair by a chain. No, I don't worry about anyone taking the whole thing. And unless they've got industrial bolt cutters or a power saw in their apron pocket, they're not getting into it. Actually, there's a second reason I spent the $200 on the case. Every year, I spend about $400 on nice suitcases, only to have the airlines gradually tear them up. Zippers pulls are the first to get torn off. Handles get pulled off, wheels break. The straw that broke the camel's back was on my last suitcase, the entire pull-out handle assembly was ripped out when I recovered my bag from the carousel. It was a late flight, and the baggage claim office was closed, and no employees around to complain to. So, after the 10th or so suitcase in as many years, I decided to get something that wouldn't get torn up. The side-benefit is it also makes a decent safe. So, to the person who commented that I spent more money to avoid theft than I've lost - I had to spend the money anyway, and it was cheaper than a nice Samsonite bag. By the way, that time I lost the money from the hotel safe? I lost US$3,000. My camera, with accessories cost around $3,500; my laptop is a custom-built Sony that cost $5,700 - I'm pretty sure I don't want to lose those. Shucks, $200 ain't nothin' compared to peace of mind.

I have just been to Pattaya for a week staying at Baybreeze hotel. The porter showed me how to set the room safe but in my state of tiredness I couldn't re-open the safe after putting in the code. I wasn't too bothered as I had my money for the evening etc and I would sort the safe out next morning. Leaving the room the security guy was doing a fire check, I told him my problem. Within 3 seconds and a couple of button pushes the safe was open. I travel with a Samsonite 3 number lock suitcase and I kept my valuables in there for the rest of the trip. FWIW I have never had a problem with Thai girls pilfering, but then again I do have good heart. Just as a PS, outside the hotel a 100 note dropped out of my pocket and 2 TG's opposite shouted to me and pointed to the money. They both finished up having a couple of lady drinks, I would have paid bar for the Kon Kaen girl but not right on the doorstep of my hotel.

Obviosly you are not so familiar with Hermanolobo's experience. In his case, when abducted - they put the memory IN - hence his copious knowlege of such things alien. Thankfully. By the way I once had money stolen out of a travel bag on the way to Thailand, on Thaiair. A whole new kind of air tax. Yep!

Let's see, I have an expensive computer, Digital SLR, cash, etc, etc, etc. I have never lost a cent in the PI or LOS. Most safes can handle what I need, if I am suspicious then I use the Hotel Safe, in that case they are responsible. Really Dr Kool, I have to agree with Oaktoad (which in itself is a rarity), you need to vet your ladies better...
