... why thank you, Hermanolobo... but, to paraphrase Rodney Dangerfield, I'm not sure I'd want to hang around anyone who considers my replies "excellent and informative"... you got to get new friends. ... Thai politics? I've now a vested interest in this country's future (Thai kids)...so, I try to pay attention... I would otherwise care less if this place slouched into the Gommorah for which it appears interminably destined. ... unsure anyone can really divine how Thai politics will play out at the day-to-day tactical level, so I try to confine my interests to a strategic view. ... it's all Third World ugly, for a lot of reasons I cite in my missives... (deeply-rooted inferior cultural values). ... in the end Thai politics is not about politics... at all... Thai political parties have no political beliefs. ... not even core beliefs... about anything... none... big government, little government; progressive taxation, flat taxation; socialism, Libertarianism... central control, local control... nada... I've looked for them, and they've got nothing. ... the first evidence of anything approaching political principles is the class warfare that is shaping-up here... pitting the ruling elites (Democrats) against the long-suffering passified poor (Thai Rak Thai, banned for corruption and replaced by the Pheu Thai... all the same corrupt politicians, just a different party name). ... Thaksin nailed it spot on... class warfare as a 'political principle' to harness voter sentiment to launch himself into control of this country... class warfare... brilliant... he is really shaking the long ruling, inbred (I do not intend that word figuratively) elites. ... and then, of course, there are the 2nd and 3rd centers of power... the roles of the Army, which really controls Thailand, and the monarchy, on which I will tread lightly here... Thailand as a democracy is only imagery. ... Thai politics is a tribal and patronage system... a guy uses money (his own or his cronies, if he is a challenger; corruptly gotten money, if he is an encumbant) to buy elected office... he buys his constituency... no one did that to more devastating effect than the billionaire Thaksin. ... once in office, he trades with the ruling party the constituent votes he controls for the power he needs to make money corruptly from being a Thai politician... he is not driven by principles, so he allies with whatever party that will 'pay' him the most, through appointment to committees overseeing whatever corrupt ministry, or 'special agencies'... then, cooperatively stealing money with the buresucrats is how they become so rich. ... so, it's all pretty ugly, and not about political doctrine at all... it's just Thai-style kleptocracy... many who live here and follow it can write exhaustively on the absolute corruption to it all... page after page in the newspapers, day after day... and that's limited to what we can see... it's ubiquitous. ... the great struggle in Thai politics now is the tectonic shift that is threatening the balance of powers... the shift in power from the long ruling Army allied with the elitist feudal inbreds, to an alliance in which rule is shared by the new class of rich (significantly Thai-Chinese) business families (a la Thaksin) and the Army. ... there is no real Thai politics, through which neccessay social change WILL be permitted and CAN be managed in a civilized and peaceful way... there is no Thai equal to Nelson Mandela, or Thomas Jefferson, on Aung San Suu Kyi, not by a long shot... for thst reason, I fear Thailand will eventually go violent... not unlike what is happening in the Middle East... same dynamics, really... we've witnessed some of that already, and it's promise remains. ... I am sure forum members taking a break from their lustful pursuits can add tons to what I offer here... maybe better suited for another thread... (that should make our esteemed web master nervous).

Magnum, I have encounterd so many idiots here (BKK tonite) over the years. I appreciate your input. I have almost washed my hands of the place. It is corrupt and dysfunctional. With a lever against the masses called Lese Majeste. I have had a few arguments with Giles Ju Ungpakorn, because I am not a socialist. But like yourself, he knows what he is talking about.

Magnum, I will sum it up nicely.... There are around 10,000 families that control the country, and if you really want to get picky you could say 1,000. It is all about them, no one else and all the struggle you see are about these families waring with each other in civilized and not so civilized ways..... Thailand is about the spoils and these families gain wealth and power..... That's all it is.....

... yes, nicely summed... I am not known to be sparing with my words, but I'd offer a summary of the system within which those 1,000 (inbred) families you cite dominate 66 million of inferior DNA: Thailand = primative tribal feudalism, in a system of inferior cultural values where individual greed is greater than their spiritual values. ... any semblence to nobility that arose out of the European ruling feudal classes to advance society is not generally apparent here. ... I'd love to hear a sociologist's view on Thailand and why it evolved to be what it is (and isn't) today... I agree wth Hermanolobo, that this place is corrupt and dysfunctional. ... still, Thailand really is a fascinating place to watch and ponder... it'd be a whole lot safer and a lot less painful doing it through a microscope, and it in a Petri dish.

Considering PI or Mexico where it is said that there are 12 families (the former Spanish Dons) who run those countries 1000 in Thailand is not so bad. Of course if you are talking about the real power in the US or UK, it is probably only 100 famlies...

yeah, I guess you could make a pyramid and place the top families in the top part and then trickle it down to the rest of us.... But the thing that makes the U.S. and other western civilizations work is that we do have laws, contract law, and the ability for almost anyone who has the brains to succeed.... in a lot of countries, no matter how smart you are, you cannot make it. Add to that the ability of the wealthy to take anyhting you make at their whim and you have....... Thailand!

Thailand is very conservative upcountry.. The school girls all have uniforms and short collar length hair. Boys crew cuts They stand to attention at 8am in front of a flagpole while the Thai Athem is played. Society is gentle and peaceful and children happy. The west by contrast has spray can drawings on walls at their schools....kids with hoodies even knives and guns.? The exposure to mass media markets....the " me" society. However, the reasons I would be careful of Thailand is perhaps the lax ability to see the world as a whole, distortions of history, subservience to State and the number one Family. Thailand is also subjected to instability, corruption and laws that can be hard to navigate. But really, I can't see a major problem. If your a westerner and obviously capable as this guy is.... He would know the outcomes of net efforts. He would also be easily capable of creating some balance ins his kids life's. They are not going to at least get in your face feminist views and passive male behaviour models....or the angry young man opposite. They are not going to be emersed in western narrow over rated self worths. In fact if done correctly Thailand is a much better place to raise kids. Just look at the social problems in western teenagers? Gay suicide, bully problems, female unheavels that are really self centred fixations.....gangs.....drugs....etc Thailand welcomes ladyboys coming out...it also is tough on bullies, girls are not as vain, gangs are smashed, drug dealers shot, and so on. I was lucky my kids embraced Christianity and got good educations. That was in Australia. But growing up in the countryside in Thailand as a half Thai might be awesome. Even the city..... If moral worries are a concern......I wouldn't worry too much.
