... but, my kids are 100% Thai, and were abandoned while young... (not orphaned... there's an important distinction there)... I sometimes (often, actually) lament that they would have less crap in their lives were they orphaned, and I could formally adopt them and get them out of here.
... and I CAN tell you that raising them to be quality people is challenging... we are immersed in Thailand, and all that entails... and learned behaviors are all about environment, only portions of which I can influence.

I cannot prevent them from knowing that their aunt accepted money from her boyfriend's family to prevent her from prosecuting her boyfriend for having sex with her own 16-year old neice, anymore than I can prevent them from reading in the newspapers, page after page of corruptions and social perversions committed here daily... do these happen in other countries... sure... but, nowhere close to what is going on in Thailand.
... still, I'd take the civilized west over Thailand any day... creating here the balance you mention, to a standard you, or I, or your kids enjoyed, is not possible... even supported by the relatively controlled environments of private schools.
... while we lost one of the older kids to 'Thai ways' she was incapable of rising above, so far so good with the others... but, I am challenged daily.
... I know others, some on this forum, who deal with variations of my same situation... step-children, half-Thai kids of their own, an adopted child... for the ones who do this in another country, I am jealous... it is at once f***ing scarey duty, and the best thing I've ever done.
... way, way too much to go into on an online forum... probably better suited for an interactive session with educators, sociologists, and child psycholgists who could offer experienced views... an amateur at this, I would still MUCH rather raise abandoned and deeply damaged kids in a country other than Thailand... any day.
... even raised successfully, kids as these futures in Thailand are uncertain under the present Thai sociology... I can only hope for change will come to Thailand in their lifetimes.
... but, Thailand is a bet... to hedge, I can try to make sure they have sufficient education, language skills, internationalist personalities, and quality character to seek their futures outside of Thailand, if they so choose, when they are old enough to understand the value of controlling their own destinies, and make that choice... a Thai controlling their own destiny is not so easy in Thailand.
... I've written much in the last days on this forum... far more than usual... while writing candidly and unvarnished, with the bark still on, under the cover of anonymity has been somewhat theraputic for me, pondering my love-hate Thai dilema this much is also emotionally wearing... depressing.
... you guys carry on... asbestos... Nana Hotel... as noted by someone above, the least of our worries in Thailand.

Their customers must be a group of loyal mongers who value location & wander across the road to NEP every evening and care little about hotel quality, why else stay there? 1500B for a standard room. The view at breakfast the next morning is a highlight - its a real freakshow. Bloated middle-aged fatties with their makeup-less teeraks gorging the buffet breakfast

Asbestos if incorporated / infused within the building material would be quite safe.
But if the material is damaged and the asbestos becomes free to pollute the air you breath in, then it is dangerous.

Only after many exposures over a long period of time (years), would any symptoms appear. Almost like smoking.

The OP's question was specifically about "flaking asbestos around the aircon." Useful answers from CalEden and Montien clarify that inert asbestos used within the construction materials shouldn't cause worry.
But, if there is flaking asbestos around the aircon, and minute particles are blown around the room by the fan, that should cause worry? Heavy smokers and drinkers could hardly be bothered. Allergic people could feel the adverse effect within a day. On the other hand, chances are that hotels around the world in most countries do use asbestos in the panels and, in the older unkempt hotels at least, minuscule particles might be floating around the room.
At the end of the day, this should hardly matter for short term visitors who expose themselves to greater risks like food poisoning, barebacking, etc.
