I generally stay at the Lakepoint every trip.  I highly recommend it if you want to be removed from the Suk bar scene.
I would not recomm it if you like to be around the scene or this is your first trip or two because the location can be inconvenient.  The skytrain is close but not that close, 10-15min walk. The taxis usually take the long way to get to Nana.  Soi Cowboy is within walking distance.
Unless you hire a car you will have a hell of a time finding a taxi if you have an early morning departure to the airport. There are no supermarkets around.  There are a couple of restaurants in the area but more for middle class types.  The hotel itself doesn't have any room service, they discontinued it when they closed down the cafe. You instead have the option of using a delivery service that obtains the food from restaurants in BKK.   basically if you come back to the room late after drinking you will be hungry unless you stock the room with food.
There is no ATM/bank/exchange booth in the area.
The swimming pool is nice but the exercise equipment is garbage.
I really don't know the guest policy because I always have a regular friend stay with me.  I think they only have to leave their ID at the desk.  I have never had a problem with the staff on any issue and they are generally very accomodating.

jjsushi,

Some interesting and useful observations.  A couple of things that might help you on your next visit.

The ATM machine is 100m directly opposite Lakepoint. You cut through between the office buildings which brings you on to Asoke main road opposite Queen Sirikit Convention Center.  The ATM is close to the 7-Eleven.

I drive so I can't comment on the availability of taxis, but you can book a taxi or a limo service to the airport through reception for early morning departures. There is also the shuttle service which is just a couple of minutes to the end of the Soi and then short walk to Sukhumvit / BTS / Robinsons.

I did not know about the room service. Good point.

You're correct that the retaurants in that area are a bit more up market...Kuppas being the best of the group and frequented by hi-so and members of the Royal family.

Catching a taxi is a pain because the area is very residential and so doesn't get a ton of tourist traffic.

The hotel car service usually costs about 800bt.  I work it into my reservation as a "free" tranfer to the airport. You have to ask for it when you book or you won't get it later.

You can still try to catch a taxi early in the morning but it is a pain in the ass and a risk when you have one of those godawful 6am flights back to the States.

I don't worry about room service to much because my friend always checks in a day ahead of me stocks the fridge and cooks.

I honestly patronize the place because of the kitchen and the in-room washer dryer.  I never leave LOS with dirty clothes.  Great value over the hotels just not that convenient of a location to the guy on a lady chasing holiday.

Thanks for the info on the ATM. I actually knew about it but was always too lazy to drag my ass over to it.

You can still get room service from the Italian restaurant on premises but to be quite honest I don't come to BKK to eat italian food everyday.

Kuppa is a great place to hang out and I regularly meet my non-niightlife Thai friends there for lunch.  The food and menu are quite good but designed more for a farang palate.  The place gets unbelievably packed for lunch and dinner.  Sometimes you think the place is a BMW and Mercedes Benz dealership when you walk past it.
