By the way, that time I lost the money from the hotel safe? I lost US$3,000.
My camera, with accessories cost around $3,500; my laptop is a custom-built Sony that cost $5,700 - I'm pretty sure I don't want to lose those.
That's quite valuable stuff to be carrying around.

in that case they are responsible.
Not too sure about that one. Tough to prove the value on something they put in their safe, even the amount of cash in the 'little brown envelope'.

But at least your insurance co. can duke it out with the hotel and not some small BG.

Yes indeed quite valuable, Coolbreeze – and where will you be staying during your next trip to BKK?

Dr Coolbreeze,

You're right about the integrity of the Pelican cases, have used them for years for diving and camera equipment. But have never taken them to this level, lol. To each his own... my real concern is the 20 lbs of weight, as that makes a big dent in the max per bag weight at the airport. I like to travel light, but often find myself bringing back lots of (heavy) books, so I would blow through the weight limit if the case itself weighed that much.

The Hotel safes behind the front desk are no form of security at all.
1) They don't sign an inventory receipt, so you can't prove you had specific items in there - they only fill out a sheet that says you used it, and what times you opened it.
2) The clerks see what you put in there, and whoever's working the graveyard shift usually works unsupervised.

On a similar note, my gf lost cash out of a big-name bank safe deposit box in Hong Kong. Of course they say that only the customer can open it, but it's naive to think they don't have spare keys. Why she puts cash in there instead of just depositing it, I don't know.

And anyway, the safe boxes are too small for an SLR camera or laptop.

No, I've never had any troubles with TGs. But if my stuff is unsecured, I just feel like 5% of my attention worries about whether or not she'll decide to make off with the equivalent of 1 year's income while I'm asleep.
And when I'm out and about, that 5% of my attention nags at me every now and then, wondering about the integrity of the cleaning staff who only earn about 5k TB per month. My stuff is worth more than 5 year's income for a hotel worker. After I lost the US$3k from the room safe, I worried even more.

Now I sleep like a baby after I've shot my load down my TGs throat, and I can go out all day, every day without thinking about my stuff.

Not all.

I left my Pattaya hotel, Tim's Royal Residence, for a couple of days to Koh Samet. As I really did not know what to expect in term of security, I decided to leave my return flight tickets and some of my emergency cash in the reception safe.

The girl at the reception was very careful counting the money and gave me a detailed receipt.

On return, she was again very careful counting the money in front of me - making sure we both agreed that all was intact. And it was.

I guess I stay in better places, I have always asked for and received a written acknowledgement for any valuables I have given the hotel.

In actuality I have only had to do this twice, once in GuangZhou and once in BKK. Both times it was because my safe was non-functional and nobody could repair it on the spot.

I do leave my computer case in the closet (w/ laptop) but lock my camera/passport/cash in the safe. Never have had any problems or have expected any.

Dr. Kool,

Given what you have said (regarding being in cahoots) I expect that your Pelican Suitcase could go down a service elevator or stairway and out the service entrance, loading dock, or fire exit. Staff (or in that case BGs) can conspire with Security Guards...

EDIT IN: Thinking about it, anyone who uses SpongeBob SquarePants as an avitar is probably (like Bob) paranoid...

I imagine if you are staying at the Nana Hotel you have more problems to worry about then the girls you bring back there.

If you can afford to spend $5700 on a laptop, you should be able to afford a cheaper travel model that does the job, and if it gets stolen..oh well.

As for Cameras, Unless you are a pro, and need it for your job, you can buy a $300 digital that can take naked pics of your ho's.

When traveling it is probably best to not take anything you don't want to lose. Especially if you are staying in some cheap hotel like Nana.

Mostly I stay in pretty nice hotels, i.e. Marriott, Sofitel, etc. When upcountry or in resorts towns I stay in whatever has the best reviews. Though occasionally, I have stayed at a few $hitholes like Nana, et al. Up north I stayed at the Golden Triangle resort, and they had no room safe. I asked to use the hotel safe for my passport, tickets, etc. They had no accountability procedures at all, so I changed my mind and put the stuff in my pocket.
When I was travelling around the backwoods of Myanmar, I not only carried my money and papers with me, but I cranked the paranoia up a notch and carried a big nasty knife strapped to my ankle under my pants, and brass knuckles in my pocket. In the end, nobody tried anything, I lost nothing, and had a wonderful time. The two BGs I had didn't seem to pay any attention to my knife when I took it off getting undressed - I figured they'd seen such things before.

Sounds like an enjoyable way to spend a holiday.
