Shangri La used to be my regular haunt before the Conrad opened and I would second Oldtimer's comment about the Krungthep wing. The K wing is also more discreet, with a seperate lobby area, which has never been very busy when I have stayed. Never had a problem with guests in the K wing. Only problem with the K wing though is that it is very close to Taksim bridge and depending on which room u end up with I suspect that noise may be a problem (never bothered me though). Horizon club rooms in the main hotel are also pretty good but not sure if the guest policy is as relaxed in the main wing.

I've just finished my third stay at the Shang, I've stayed in both wings, but only in an executive suite in the main wing. With Golden Circle membership, you can upgrade to a suite upon check-in for an additional $25USD/day, if available. It's a good deal because it nearly triples your space. Never had any difficulties bringing guests in, except for some very nasty looks I got from older couples in the elevators. The girls I stayed with this week were quite impressed with the suite, and amply rewarded me for my good taste in accomodations. They had each stayed at JW Marriott, but had never seen anything like this. With in-room safes, I saw no need to ask the girls to leave their IDs at the desk.

I just stayed 2 nights at The Peninsula, absolutely fantastic. Before I booked I got an e-mail from the Pen saying no joiner fees payable. I booked a Grand deluxe room for 2 people on the River Retreat package, this includes 'S' class Mercedes one way transfer from Don Muang. When I checked in alone, I explained to reception that my travelling companions flight was late and they would be joining me later. After meeting a nice TG in Country Road went back to hotel at 10-15pm, straight to reception and told them that my guests flight had now arrived, they had a quick look at her id and said" Have a good night sir" and I did! I suppose they smelt the BS, but as Smegma says, Real 5* hotels welcome their guests.

I scored the Shang for 55 a night plus taxes and Priceline fees. One of the tricks is too avoid a Saturday night stay. Applied for my Golden Circle membership. Wanna get my free breakfast and if I can upgrade to suite for an extra 25 will do so. On bidding for travel they talk about about a a 95 upgrade to horizon with suite, I much prefer just the suite for 25. Any tips to max the chance of my upgrade?? Good news that this joint is girl friendly!!! If I get suite was thinking of having a party there. Think the hotel will hassle me if I bring 10-15 people into my suite? I'm not a 5star kind of guy, who and how much should I tip there? Also need a place to stay for my final night Saturday. Will be checking out at 4AM so it doesn't have to fancy prefer short taxi ride away though do understand taht I'm near skytrain if traffic is bad.

Wear a nice clean shirt. Don't show up with 10-15 guests. It is very near the SkyTrain. For taxi to the airport at 4:00 AM, don't let them try to charge you a flat 400.
