The new Majestic Grand (not Majestic Suites) is a nice upscale hotel with reasonable prices and has rooms with balcony on their executive floor... it is situated slightly off Sukh. Rd, "Soi 4" and GF indeed, as we learn from the infamous BKKTonite Forum...

Just booked the Landmark for 3 weeks in September. Got quoted 3800 baht per night, taxes in and a breakfast. Seems like a pretty good rate, any other suggestions for hotels around that price?

Landmark Field Report: 10/24 - 11/3/05

Executive Summary.
Excellent high class hotel near NEP. Better value for the money than JW Marriott. Got the “basic” double room for $82 (3280 baht) /night Oct, $109/night Nov via CBS Tour, tax and breakfast in Atrium included, charged in USD so no credit card foreign currency/conversion fees. My friends managed to get an even better deal at $62/night, tax and breakfast in Greenhouse included via a secondary website off of Octopus.com (we’re still trying to find the exact address again). Excellent, clean facilities (marbled walls, spotless glass, fancy reception area and lounge), friendly and courteous staff (including many beautiful ladies, some of which I would consider stunners at the Go-Gos), good reasonable priced eating places (including 24 hr place), well equipped gym with machines, free weights, & treadmills (but no picture taking, I wonder why?). Outstanding location - 2 minutes to Nana BTS, about the same to NEP with no streets to cross, Thai Military money exchange right outside (same building) open 0830 - 2130 hrs, 7 days a week (pretty sure, I checked but sometimes temporarily closed or opens late), pharmacy 1 minute away that sells Penagra and Tadalis, 24 hr internet café in nearby Subways sandwich shop.

1. Girlfriendly? Definitely. Brought girls to my room about 9/10 nights, between 2030 - 0200 hrs, right though the front door and past the front desk. On 3 occasions, brought 2 girls at once. Most of the time, staff seemed not to care, with the front desk busy with customers checking in, the doorlady only concerned about opening the door, and the rest of the staff just doing their specific jobs. On night 6, there was hotel staff (2 men and 1 lady) sitting at a desk in front of the elevators (previously never manned). I got in the elevator with a BG in tow along with some other tourists. One of the staff jumped up, ran to the elevator, and asked what my room number was. “1111” I said, as the elevator doors closed. Oh-oh, what was that about? I told my friends about it the next day over breakfast, wondering if there was a TG surcharge as noted a couple times on this forum and also by some friends. We figured out that you can get a girl past the front desk by going through the Greenhouse (from outside ground level), exit the opposite door down the short steps to the mini-mall, around the back and up 2 short flights of stairs to exit double-glass doors on the opposite side of the elevators (near the back garage door). This won’t get you past the desk right in front of the elevators, but avoids the walk of shame through the lobby, and manning of the elevator desk seemed random. 2 nights later, with 2 BGs in tow, the desk was manned and a man in a suit asked to see my room key. He asked the girls leave their ID’s with him. One of the girls made a face, but they both obliged. The next day, we spent the whole day at Samut Prakan (Ancient City, Crocodile Farm) and they forgot to pick up their ID’s at the desk. When we got back, 1 girl was allowed to pick up both ID’s while the other waited in a cab, but she was asked to sign some type of log. Finally, on my last night (so as not to prematurely draw attention to myself), I located the Duty Manager at a desk near the front doors and specifically asked him what the hotel’s policy was on bringing girls to my room, for example from NEP. He asked for my room number, looked it up in his computer, and said that since I had a double it was no problem bringing a girl to my room, but they ask she leave her ID at the desk. A couple days earlier, I asked a lady at the reception desk if I could bring 2 “guests” with me to breakfast at the Atrium. She said that since I had a double, one guest would be free but I would have to pay for the other guest. Cost was 650 baht, but total would be 713 baht (which I took to be taxes). So there you have it. You can even have 2 girls stay overnight and (apparently) through the whole next day, and bring one to breakfast for free! Wow this is getting long. Field report to continue…

Landmark Field Report: 10/24 - 11/3/05 (continued)

2. 1st Impressions - Negative. The cutie that checked me in escorted me to my room. I expected it to be a litter bigger than the “basic” I had at the Marriott, but it wasn’t - it was about the same size or smaller. The 1st thing I did was to check the minibar to ensure it was stocked (so I wouldn’t get charged for anything missing). There was condensation all over the inside of the fridge, apparently because the temperature had been turned way down below “1” (to conserve energy?) The 2 bottles of Evian water were severely warped, squished in the middle and bent over from thermal contraction. This made everything in the fridge look old and untouched in ages. There was a spout with free standing cream for coffee, which I assumed was sour based on the looks of everything else. The room looked slightly used, with a few minor scratches here and there, and some grouting missing between the bathroom sink tiles. Things so minor I never noticed them again, but a bit less “perfect” than the “basic” room at the Marriott. There was a big white wall from the Sundeck about 5’ in front of my window, blocking most of the view. This turned out to be an advantage because I could leave the curtains open to see how much light was outside, but no one could see in.

3. Restaurants. I ate at the Nipa, Atrium, and Greenhouse, and they were all great. Breakfast at the Greenhouse is basically a subset of the one at the Atrium. Same quality, same basic stuff like bacon and sausages. About 10 hot dishes, eggs made to order, fruits, juices, breads, cereal, hash browns, some other stuff. Good enough for me. The Atrium adds things like dim sum and has an overall bigger spread. Since I usually don’t go back for 2nds, the Greenhouse breakfast was good enough for me, and my friends saved $10 on there room going with the Greenhouse instead of the Atrium. Don’t underestimate the value of breakfast in your room rate. It costs about 700 baht to bring a guest to the Atrium breakfast. About 9 am the Atrium was busy and the staff couldn’t keep up with the bacon, eggs, and fruit juices. The Greenhouse is open 24 hrs, a much better alternative to Nana Café. Thai food at Nipa was awesome.

4. Staff. Entire staff was very friendly and helpful. There was a small lady dressed in white to open the front door. I deliberately went through the side doors she was not manning as much as possible because I didn’t want to make her work so hard as I went in and out. The ladies at the front desk were beautiful. I even got flirty with one of them. There was never any line, even though I stopped by the desk at least a couple times a day to make change.

5. That stupid Evian water. The minibar is like a toy for the girls. They like to take stuff from it as if it were free. The small bottles of Evian mineral water are charged at 140 baht (it was 240 baht at the Marriott). They cost 45 baht at Foodland, but I couldn’t find any at the nearby pharmacies/mini marts - not even 7-11. Foodland across the street or the grocery store in the basement of Phloen Chit Center was the closest places I could find.

BlueHawaii,
Just a few suggestions:
1) if you get into a room in a 5 stars hotel, certainly Landmark, and you find a list of few things as you had, call front desk, ask to speak with a manager or supervisor and explain to him/her the issues you found. I always inspect the rooms upon check in, and never take a room if I don't like it, or if it has a few problems I do not expect to find at the level of hotel I am at. You will be suprized how you may move to another better room (high floor, even an upgrade). Do not accept things and be quiet its your money. Even a 5 starts hotel may have less good rooms (that includes the Marriott).
2) You can ask to empty the minibar and use it to put whatever you want in, that way you wont have an issue of what is missing and what you may need to pay that you did not consumed. For long stays, ask front desk to empty the minibar and make a trip to foodland or ploenchit supermarket (or Tops since you are justa accross BTS station) and get the good stuff you want loaded in that fridge.
3) 5 starts hotels always appreciate feedback and serve betters those who have the taste and expect high standards. Make sure to inform a manager (could be even general manager-don't worry you will not hurt his feelings) about your inspection of the room and explain that you are doing it because you care about the standard bla bla bal... if you go back to that place frequent you will be remembered. Do it with polite voice and care, not the ugly farang way if you know what I mean.
4) Marriott used to be one of the bext values and places for 5 starts hotels. not anymore. Security issues are very critical when it comes to US based hotel chains. Remember the explosion of a car bomb at the JW Marriott in Jakarta? Why risk it? They have now metal detectors, as if this can help prevent a car bomb. Be safe.

Cheers!

Good suggestions from Apollo, particularly on point 1. It's your money and you should certainly take up any issues that you have with the management. Don't feel awkward; it's your hard-earned mulla.

On the girls' liberal use of the minibar; I've never had an incident where the girl tried to take anything - they normally know better than that. Also, I am a bit perplexed that you were charged for Evian; I remember being provided with two complimentary bottles of water daily when I stayed there. I also rememeber that there is a 7/11 (or something along those lines) just further up on Sukhumwit - you don't have to cross the street. We are talking just a few minutes of walking.

I agree, good tips. I didn't know you could have the minibar emptied.

As for the Evian water, same trick I fell into at the Marriott. The bottles of water outside the fridge are complementary, but the Evian mineral water inside the fridge is charged at Las Vegas hotel rates - that's about $6 at the Marriott for 1 small bottle of water. 7-11 nearby didn't carry the Evian mineral water.

Maybe I overdid it by sounding too negative. Landmark was great overall. Just that my 1st impression was negative.

minibar is a very profitable service hotels have. Fight all this by simply ask them to empty the minibar, don't be lazy to go a few steps to a 7/11 or Tops and load up all the goods you like, at 1/10th the cost. I am suprized at how people think there is no other way, just because the minibar is there it forces you to use it. Even el chipo hotels have them, just because its a great money making comparable to the room's rate. Other one is the calling from the room telephone rates - use a calling card with a tall free number for international and even local calls if you must. Don't be shy to do the above even at 5 stars hotel. Actually you will get more respect and send a message that this farang is not stupid and knows the value of his bhat. Thais understand how to be cheap charlie even better than charlie!

Cheers!

Restocking the minibar is a great idea. Like I said, the girls think this is a toy. I had 2 young girls that were gremlins, raiding the minibar, messing up the place, one girl even managed to switch the TV channel to a pay movie for B525. I know they weren’t watching the movie because the movie was in English and one girl barely spoke English, the other didn’t. The 2 girls were roommates and one told me that their room did not have a TV or fridge. I guess I’ll stock it with stuff they like. They seemed to like the tomato juice, and yes, the Evian mineral water (even though there was a different brand bottled water right next to it). What is it with this stuff?
