Dr. Kool,

Given what you have said (regarding being in cahoots) I expect that your Pelican Suitcase could go down a service elevator or stairway and out the service entrance, loading dock, or fire exit. Staff (or in that case BGs) can conspire with Security Guards...
Speaking of theives... I already mentioned that possibility early in this thread.

After I lost the US$3k from the room safe, I worried even more.
Have you ever considered travelers checks? You can often get them without a fee, they are easy to cash and you get a good exchange rate (banks do not have to worry about counterfeit or stolen TC's if they follow certain identification rules).

The pelican cases are tops.

I brought a small standard metal cash box. I threw away the coin part, drilled small holes in the feet. I have four small wood screws (hex head) and nut driver. I've added two small hasps with small combination locks. I Screw the box to anything solid and lock it up. I also have a light weight chain if I have to I can chain it to the bed head board.

I do get the managers permission as a stipulation to me staying.

Oh boy, paranoia sure runs deep for those with bad karma and nad judgments, doesn't it? Someone should write a book about the length people go to...

Gotta agree with Duck here,

The safest place to keep the cash is in the bank. What is the difference between ATM charges, Money Changer Charges, and TC Charges.

Those who bring $3000 USD in cash are just asking for problems.

When I go out I just take an ATM Card, a Credit Card (with a low limit), and a cheap Mobile Phone. Everything else is in the room or hotel safe depending on where I am staying...

Yep, I'm with CI on that one - not quite get it why people drag large sums of cash with them, and then act surprised when they get ripped off.

I like to think of my travel safe as cheap insurance. I have $10 and 2 hrs investmented in mine. The cost, time and inconvience to replace a stollen passport alone justifies the effort. I do keep some extra case (less than $200) as a rule in my room along with my 2 cameras and watch who's total value is under $400. Cheap insurance.

I also travel to latin america and other SEA countries which are not as safe as LOS. Cheap insurance beats a bigger loss.

Paranoia is a false fear, theft is reality and present all over the world. I have friends who have been ripped off by unknown persons and a few who have had the ill luck of bringing a pretty lady to the room who picked up a valuable item and sleezed out with it.

Who would not use a room safe or hotel safe if one is available ?

Why do most hotels provide some type of safe ?

My gosh it's mass paranoia

Just MHO

No, drilling and screwing a coinbox to a piece of furniture is paranoia, or chaining it to the room, or finding hiding places in the toilet tank to hide stuff, etc...

Using an in-room safe in order to protect valuables is just common sense, though also really only gives an illusion of safety.

When in LOS, I stay in places I'm familiar with, I take girls I know, from places I frequent often, and generally do not go out of my way to hide my computer, electronics, etc..

I also keep a glass filled with around 3,000-4,000 THB on the table next to the fridge, letting each girl know that if she needs something, or needs money to buy some food, or whatever, to just take it from that glass -- that's what it's there for. So far, nothing has ever been taking by hotel staff, and if a girl uses some of the money, she always brings change back and tells me how much she used (and I get some yummy food in return).

My policy is to show and demonstrate trust (i.e. not assume the people I hang out with are criminals), and so far I always get honesty and trust back. I also stay away from freelancers, or 'weird' girls... saves me from wasting resources on paranoia, I guess.

This applies to LOS, I may take different precautions in other primitive countries/cultures, like the US, or London...

DD,

that 3-4K baht in the glass is an interesting idea, and also circumvents the need to open your wallet for things like that. I think I'd put less in the glass, as food, etc. are much cheaper than that, that's just me and the cheap charlie cryin' in my beer aspect of my s/t fee negotiation, but it's interesting to see the response from the TG's you've gotten with it.

"Finding hiding places in the toilet tank to hide stuff"
Hmm I thought that I was soo smart when I hide my cash in a used small water bottle in the toilet tank. It was first when I read in travel magazine on the beach about stupid people that tried to hide money and valuables in their room and thieves knowing all about the good places like the toilet tank got back to the hotel and in the bathroom toilet overflooded. Now I know it’s a bad idea. This was like ten years ago.
I try to keep valuables at a minimum when travelling but in some cases like laptop and passport. It is not the amount of money it’s all extra work the lost info and so on that is the problem.
