Quote: from billgreen678 on 10:35 am on Dec. 3, 2005 What about Exec Lounge in Westin. Is the breakfast anygood? Free booze at happy hour?
Stayed there Feb.2005 and got Exec Floor bennies. Breakfast buffet was well done. Not as a large spread like Sheraton's Orchid Cafe breakfast, but high quality stuff. Never took advantage of the evening complimentary drinks, but that has been a standard perk for the few Westins I've stayed in Asia. - B -

The SPG site is currently showing both the Westin and the Sheraton as costing 7000 Starwood points a night. At that rate, I'd go for the Sheraton.

I've been wondering how long before the Westin points requirement was increased. It was a real bargain at 3-4,000 per night. There is another option many Starwood points fiends overlook. I can't remember exactly, points+pay or cash&points, something like that. You can get the Sheraton Grande for 2,800 points + $US45++. Most times when you try to get this too far out it is not available. However I've regularly found it available at the last minute. Something else you need to watch is I think there is some rule that you can only get it for 4 consecutive nights. Regards, F46

Starwood has both "cash & points" and "room & suite" upgrades. All Starwood properties in LOS (SGS, WGS, Sheraton Pattaya and Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket) are category 3 hotels, which means as FFS put it, 2800 points and $45 per night for the cash & points upgrade.

The Westin has been up to 7000 points before, and then rebounds back to CAT2. Similar to how the Phuket Sheraton was once CAT4 and then down to CAT3 recently. Once upon a time, the Royal Orchid jumped to CAT2 then back to CAT1 and jumped yet again to CAT2. It's hard to keep track, so I just choose on the day of booking.

I'm a regular at both WGS and SGS, but Sheraton stock just moved ahead of Westin (IMHO). BTS Asoke station platform has been extended and is now directly accessible from SGS. Exit the hotel lobby level, turn left and follow the sidewalk to Asok station. The BTS ramp extension also connects down to Times Square Mall, you can get to the Westin/Robinson side of Sukhumvit much easier too.
[edit in: 20.Dec.2006] Not sure if all rooms have this now, but I had a wall-mounted flat panel TV and a progressive scan DVD player. SGS also has a steak and seafood BBQ buffet at the pool deck, starts at 19:00.

I prefer the SGS. I once booked an industry rate of $29 at the Westin. The front desk staff were shocked, but there it was, right on their computer screen, so they honored it. The following trip, I booked a similar $39 rate at the SGS. Same reaction. Both rates mysteriously disappeared from reservations systems after my stays. Sometimes local management can't believe the shit that corporate does to them! I've also paid going rates for the SGS, but I wouldn't do so for the Westin, as much as I like their beds.

Thanks for the info. I will be staying at the Sheraton next week for 11 days.
