I'd actually prefer "baggage proof Girls" Some of you may need to think very hard to get that one. In the mean time, enjoy.

In BKK not such a problem but once you get out to smaller places or some of the other countries nearby it can become very hard to find hotels you can trust to have good security or even a safe sometimes. I don't like the idea of the 20 extra pounds this suitcase weighs but it is better then some of the ways I have stored stuff. I carry a cheap laptop I don't care about but I do care about all the nude photos I transfer over to it. Then there was the time I used the safety box at the Nana Tai Mansion. Nothing stolen but the lock was always a bit hard to open. Go to check out and I and no one else can get the dam thing open. Took them 20 minutes with a hammer and a large screw driver beating the hell out of it to open it. Thought I was going to miss my flight I have stayed in places outside Thailand where they just wrap your stuff up in newspaper tape it up and make you sign your name all over it. However where they store it is not large enough to start wrapping a laptop up in newspaper plus the hassle that everytime you want to use it you would have to get them to unwrap the dam thing. Same goes for a camera, you use it to much it becomes a hassle having to store it in the safety box everynight plus rather puts a dent in taking those picture if it is in the safety box while you are in the room with the girl. Not all countries have go-go bars you can pull from where you might have less risk as you can go back to the bar. With traveling to other countries with no safe in the room ect.. the risk goes up. The cost of the suitcase is small compared to the value of the pictures/info on laptop/ ect.. if stolen.

I leave cash sitting on my dresser in the Hotel all of the time, usually it is a few thousand baht of pocket money. Never once have I had the cleaning lady touch it. Of course this may be a reflection of the places I stay... BTW: The money in the glass is a good idea Duck.

If you stay in a good place, the hired help there is grateful that they have a job in a good place, and stealing a couple hundred baht is not worth the risk to them. Plus they know that if they give good service, most of the people staying in that kinda place will give them a tip anyways.

uhuh.. I echo CS and Baquawn here... staff is usually safe in nice hotels/serviced appartments. A few days back in BKK had a funny experience... woke up in the afternoon with a huge hangover and before passing out again noticed two guys in uniform through the door in the living room... they were holding a stash of maybe 40 1000bhts notes I'd left on the living room's table... one guy was putting them one besides the other on the same table...seems they hadn't noticed me yet... weird... I managed to sit up on the bed and ask them they were doing and they got all surprised... Happened that some service boy entered the room for whatever reason, prolly after ringing while I was hammered... than kindda panicked seeing 6 months worth of his salary in cash Forte girls didn't managed to nick that night then the good man called his manager..than I guess they started counting... go figure...but cool... I stay in some 300$ a night shithole in London at the moment and the f***ers in local pubs expect us to get up to the bar to get a drink and the food is horrendous and I sure wished I had some little thai ho stealing issues to deal with rather than typing that post from dull hell... Latenight, western democracies suck

Just got back to USA after a month in LOS with my portable safe. It was a little heavy, but I didn't have to pay any over-weight fees on the airplanes because I'm 100k club with United Airlines. Hotels I stayed at were: Marriott in Pattaya; Kosa and Sofitel Raja Orchid in Khon Kaen; Rimpao in Kalasin I had the bellmen handle the baggage, and tipped them well for dealing with the weight - just under 80 lbs with all my crud jammed into it. Of those hotels, only the Marriott had a room safe, even though the others are the nicest places available. I rented a pick-up truck, and when I was travelling around the boonies, often I had my case with me, chained to the cargo loops in the back. When I saw something worth taking photos of, I hauled out my tripod and camera and went to work. Often times I carried my camera on the seat next to me for those spontaneous shots; but when I left the vehicle to go shopping or whatever, back in the box it went and got locked up. If anyone felt like tearing the cargo loops out of the truck, it would make a lot of noise and take a while, so I didn't worry about it. Anyway, as usual, no problem with anyone messing with anything. Not one person made any comment about my chains and locks, not even a second look. They were too busy looking at me, wondering what such an incredibly handsome farang was doing in this or that village or hanging around some little farm road or rice paddy.

By the way Daffy, Why do you think it's stupid or insane to be careful? It certainly doesn't hurt nor cost much money to lock down one's valuables. I guess if you're a cheap charlie with no possessions of value you have nothing to worry about. Unlike you, I have some nice things. Your suggestion about the glass is fine if you're talking about 3-4k baht. Not such a great idea if you've got 300-400k baht. The reason I sometimes have large amounts of cash is because I occasionally have business to take care of. My ATM only allows a max of $400 withdrawal per day, and not all transactions can be done by credit card. If I transfer funds internationally between banks they charge modest fees, but the exchange rate is a huge rip-off - you can lose 12% to 15% of your funds that way. If I bring crisp $100 bills, I can change them at Chinese money-changer businesses for 2 - 3% or so. Your system works for you, Daffy, but not everyone on earth is a clone of yourself, thank God.
