If you can get into the Manhattan I would recommend staying there. Stayed there many times most recently the end of January 05 and have never been disappointed. Front desk is great and after asking for my key 2 or 3 times they usually see me coming and already have it out on the counter. Most times I just keep my key and just walk to the elevator with my date.
I will admit that the touts will drive you nuts when coming and going but I’ve found an easy way to get around that, I just say to them “Hey, I’m going to be here for awhile and I promise before I leave I will come in and take a look at your store”. As I walk by I shake hands, even stop and talk a little. It was nice to get to know these guys and the relationship has been a great benefit since they have helped me translate a few times.
I haven’t had any trouble with the construction because there really isn’t any!! I’ve been watching them for the last year and a half put in the foundation! Sometimes I’ll stand at the window and watch their progress and it just astounds me how slow the project is. I’ve always stayed on the construction side and never had any problems.
Another great benefit of the Manhattan is the luggage storage. Go to the bellboy desk and just let them know you would like to store some bags. I’ve found that those cheap airlines will rape you on weight surcharges so this service comes in very handy, also it’s free! You don’t have to stay with the Manhattan again to get the baggage out.
The is location is great. Soi 15 is really in the middle between Nana and Cowboy, very convenient.

I liked Manhattan as well and the breakfast is very good, but when I stayed in March 2004, I was facing the front. I could hear the very loud construction in the back in the hallway that went from 8:00 am to night. At the time, there was light construction in the front, but it was noisy at times and annoying when I had company.

I guess the construction noise doesn’t bother me, sorry to mislead anyone. With noise in the front and back I don't think there is a room that isn't affected by construction. I have always stayed on an upper floor, maybe that was the reason for the light noise?
Also, I sleep by the engine room on my ship for 7 months out of the year maybe that’s it?
There are cheap alternatives to be had in Bangkok without noise
