DR,, not wanting to enter into this dissagreement BUT I have two questions,,,, you have nice things, often carry 300-400 hundred thousand BAHT but have an ATM card that only allows $400 per day??? Even a relative pauper such as myself has an ATM card that allows AUD1,000 = US$760. Secondly on the bank transfers, I hope you are sending the money in your home countries currency and having it exchanged in Thailand?? I sent Thai BAHT once !!! only ever once, lost 10 - 12 % on the exchange, but when I send AUD and have it exchanged at the other end it usually only works out 2%. I'll leave you and Daffy alone to knuckle it out now. Cheers Mel.

It's been a year now, and thought I'd post an update. I've spent 6 weeks in Thailand off and on since my last post on this thread, travelling here and there, and rarely had anyone give my Pelican suitcase a second glance - only the bellboys sometimes don't like heaving it around - fully loaded it's about 65 to 70 pounds. Unlike some of the predictions from other posters, no-one has tried to tamper with it. A couple of times I've had Immigration/Customs people ask me what's in it - I just say it's "normal luggage", they shrug and I move on. Been around the world a few times and only a few minor scratches on it - it's holding up great - better than any other suitcase I've had.

I guess it depends on how you travel Dr Kool. For example if you are traveling through a British Airport (no matter where you came from) you are only allowed one piece of hand-carry (including purses, computer cases, bags of booze). There is no exception. Now add that to a client who insists that you travel BA (which allows only one piece of checked luggage not to exceed 30kg) you can not afford the extra 10kg that bag weighs. Now you can check an additional bag but it travels at excess baggage rates. Now my Atlantic (titanium frame) weighs < 5 kg making it ideal for traveling through these pesky British airports. This allows me to cram 25kg of all the crap that can not fit into a computer bag and not have to worry about deciding between an extra jacket for cold weather and clean underwear. BTW:If you decide to fly BA with a surfboard or a windsurfing kit forget it. These are not allowed for checked luggage and must be shipped separately by freight (DHL, FedEx, etc.)...

This baggage weight crap has always had be bewildered. The crunch came at Sydney airport when my wife was questioned about her luggage being 31kg,, yes 1kg over. I merely asked the guy behind us in line " how much do you weigh mate? ".,,, ahh 110kg was his reply. So it is ok he carries 110 + 29 in luggage but my wife cannot load the plane with her 52 + 31 WTF!!! The reply was just " please be more carefull about your luggage weight in future. Mel

Leaving BKK October 2, I got dinged for 12kg overweight on my checked bag. They (China Air) wouldn't charge by the kg, but instead got me for US$103 for an 'extra bag charge'. I protested, but they were firm... Of course, that's only, what, AU$3.00, at least if the US$ doesn't drop before I can press <return> at the end of this sentence... Seriously, I can't believe the CanuckBuck is worth more than the greenback now!!! Damn... hs
