I've been staying at the GP on trips to BKK for around ten years. Generally, I like it fine. But the price increases have put me off. Problem is, I can't scare up a reasonable alternative. What is out there that is like the GP but cheaper? For those gents that have moved on from the GP, where have you gone?

IMHO GP is still good if you get the monthly deal.
Otherwise Other Hotel are better: Majestic Suites above all.

Thanks! Some good thoughts. I actually shot the Grottino several e-mails, but never got an answer. I stayed at the Majstic once. Pretty small room, but I understand they have bigger ones as well. Fortuna--I know nothing about. Just looked it up.
That gives me a few to think about as alternatives.

very little difference in size for doubles
however the single superior and single studio listed is VERY small. hard to move past another person in the room
i would recommend double deluxe, it's good enough for the price
but if you plan only to sleep, wake up and BANG some "talent" in the room, a single studio is enough for "activity" and sleep

Used GP for 1-2 years on frequent trips to BKK, and eventually developed an acute sense of being ripped off every time (the 350 THB surcharge would only confirm that, what's the point of going to a Serviced Apt if they start charging for guests!?). I later moved on to President Park on Suk Soi 24, grew disillusioned over time : TV, or A/C, sound system, or internet connection (or all of the above) not working, as well as crappy breakfasts. Then ended up at Centre Point, by far my first choice for quality/price in Serviced Apartment category : rooms, amenities, food, service, cost, quality of beds, etc. Though a jacuzzi and ceiling mirrors would have made it heaven! Roughly same price category at the President, but so much better! Somerset : still a bit more pricey but not better than CP. For all it's worth!

My friend just stayed at the GP and there still isn't a joiner fee. However, the guards are more insistent now on taking ID cards. When I stayed there a year and a half ago, the choice was mine whether or not to have the girl give their ID"s. This was great because we met some non working girls and they just hung out with us.

All President properties are still guest friendly. This may be due to some customers booking single rooms and wanting overnight guests. If you book twin/double there are no joiners.
