I got an e-mail reply from the Landmark today that stipulates a 1000 baht joiner fee (and that was for a suite on the lifestyle floors).

Whether they enforce it or not, I don't know but I certainly wouldn't want to take the risk when there are plenty of other nearby options.

Did your reservation include breakfast? Some of the rates are quoted for singles and is higher when there are two people in the room.

I know that in the past if I took my GF to the buffet they charged me.

In fact, after 5 years of staying at the Landmark I have never been asked to present ID or pay any fee for any girl I brought in. Hell, they did not even notice...

My quote included breakfast.

I specifically asked them about joiner fees in a seperate e-mail and that was the answer.

Maybe it's just standard company policy to stipulate a joiner fee and nothing would be charged in reality. I really don't know but it's enough to make me look elsewhere.

There are plenty of other 4 star hotels (and even 5 stars) that can be had in that price bracket.

My quote included breakfast.

That's of absolutely no importance.

What is important: was your quote based on Double or Single occupancy? It is most rare to charge for joiner if you booked Double and even those few will back down if you argue the point (even where Double/Single prices are same-same). So go figure.

BTW they will not charge joiner when your guest signs in with you at check-in to a Double. The Night Clerk at a 4-Star stopped my (conservatively dressed) TGF one night (who had registered at check-in days earlier). I gave her the key, told her to go up, and then totally unloaded on the Manager and demanded apologies, not to me but to my friend - so given in abundance - with comps.

Based on double occupancy (perhaps they interpreted the joiner as being a 3rd person as I'd already said it was for double occupancy?).

I believe you've answered your own question. The Landmark normally doesn't charge a joiner fee if you've booked a double room. When you specify double occupancy but ask about guests, they assume it is a third person.

Also. in today's PC environment, I doubt many hotels will state in an email that they will never under any circumstances charge a joiner fee for an unregistered guest. There's too big a risk the query could be coming from an investigative reporter who's making up a list of hotels that "encourage prostitution."

Virtually all three-, four- and five-star hotels that are considered guest friendly still retain the right to charge a joiner fee, even if they never do so in practice. That's to prevent extreme cases, in which someone - not necessarily a punter - allows five or six people to sleep in a room in which two or three are registered. More guests in a room than have been paid for is an everyday problem in hotels around the globe and doesn't relate directly to P4P all the time.

When I booked here I never booked double and never got charged a joiner fee. The girl just leaves the id at the concierge or tour desk. I love this place as just round the courner its the morning 2 night bar my favourite pick up place and gets me in the right mood.
